What to Wear to Bondi Beach

BONDI.

What to wear when the beach is the least chaotic part of your day.

Bondi Beach is easy to dress for once you stop trying to dress for “Bondi” and start dressing for the actual day.

On the sand, swimwear, a shirt, shorts and sandals are enough. If you are walking the promenade, grabbing coffee or heading somewhere for lunch afterwards, the useful trick is having one proper layer and shoes that make the outfit feel intentional once you leave the beach.

You do not need a resort wardrobe. You do not need designer labels. And you definitely do not need to spend the day dressed as though someone may photograph you for a swim campaign.

The quick answer

Women: swimsuit, oversized cotton or linen shirt, relaxed shorts, flat sandals or clean sneakers, sunglasses and a cap or sun hat.

Men: swim shorts, plain T-shirt or lightweight shirt, sandals or sneakers, sunglasses and a cap.

If you are staying after sunset, carry a light knit, sweatshirt or wind layer. That will handle the beach itself and most of what happens immediately around it.

What women can wear to Bondi Beach

A simple swimsuit with an oversized shirt is probably the most useful Bondi beach combination. The swimsuit can be whatever you genuinely feel comfortable swimming in: bikini, one-piece, rash vest, board shorts, long-sleeved swimwear. There is no reason to chase a particular silhouette merely because you are in Bondi.

If you know you will leave the beach for lunch or coffee, a one-piece can be especially handy because it works underneath shorts, linen trousers or a skirt without needing a complete change of clothes. Throw a cotton or linen shirt over the top and the beach-to-café transition is mostly done.

Swim shorts and a good T-shirt are enough for most beach days. If you want something that works better away from the sand, choose swim shorts with a simple cut rather than something that looks purely like surf gear.

Then add a plain tee, short-sleeved shirt, linen shirt, and clean sneakers or sandals. A lightweight shirt is especially useful if you are spending several hours outside because it doubles as sun coverage.

I would take a shirt over an elaborate beach cover-up almost every time.

The most useful Bondi beach piece: a proper shirt

A relaxed cotton, linen or lightweight poplin shirt can be worn over swimwear, with shorts, open over a tank or tee, to a café, for extra sun coverage, or later in the day when the breeze comes up.

White works beautifully, but so do pale blue, stripe, cream, olive, navy and natural linen. The key is choosing something that still looks like clothing once you are no longer standing on sand.

What shoes should you wear?

For a pure beach day, flat sandals, slides or thongs are fine. If you are combining the beach with walking around Bondi, I would strongly consider clean sneakers.

Waverley Council notes that the promenade and beachfront are heavily used by walkers and joggers, and Bondi links into the coastal walk towards Tamarama and Bronte. See Waverley Council’s current beach information.

  • Beach only: sandals, slides or thongs
  • Beach + café: sandals or clean sneakers
  • Beach + coastal walk: sneakers
  • Beach + dinner later: wear or carry one slightly neater pair if needed

Do not make yourself miserable on the coastal walk in flimsy sandals just because they look more “beachy”.

Beach to café to lunch: the same outfit, three ways

You do not need a second outfit. You need to look as though you have left the beach.

Beach → café

Put on a shirt, add shorts or trousers if needed, dry off properly, put on shoes, carry your towel rather than wearing it. If you are still dripping seawater onto the floor, the outfit is not the problem.

Beach → lunch

Women: swimsuit + relaxed trousers + shirt, or a simple cotton dress + flat sandals.
Men: swim shorts + linen shirt, or tailored shorts + tee, with clean sneakers or simple sandals.

Bondi generally rewards relaxed clothes that look deliberate rather than dressed-up clothes that feel slightly out of place.

Staying until sunset

This is when one extra layer earns its place in your bag. Even after a warm day, the beachfront can feel cooler once the sun drops or the wind picks up. Carry a light knit, sweatshirt, overshirt, denim jacket or lightweight wind-resistant jacket.

You do not need a dramatic wardrobe change. A warm layer over your daytime clothes is usually enough.

What colours work well at Bondi Beach?

Almost anything, but clean, simple colours suit the hard Sydney daylight particularly well: white and denim, navy and white, pale blue and cream, olive and stone, black and tan, chocolate and cream. Bright swimwear can also look fantastic against the water and sand.

You do not need to dress entirely in beige to demonstrate that you understand the eastern suburbs.

On a windy day

Bondi can be very breezy. On those days, go for a shirt rather than a very loose wrap, shorts rather than a floaty skirt if you are walking, a cap that fits properly, a light wind layer and secure sandals or sneakers. The glamorous oversized sun hat becomes less glamorous once you are chasing it towards Campbell Parade.

What to wear on a cooler day

Bondi Beach is still worth visiting outside summer. For a cooler day, swap swimwear-as-the-main-outfit for proper layers.

Women: jeans or relaxed trousers, tee, knit, light jacket and sneakers.
Men: jeans or chinos, T-shirt, sweatshirt or knit, casual jacket and sneakers.

If the weather is mild, you can still carry swimmers underneath or in your bag if you plan to get in the water. The important thing is not assuming that blue sky automatically means beachwear weather.

What to take in your beach bag

  • Towel
  • Sunscreen
  • Water
  • Sunglasses
  • Hat or cap
  • Shirt or cover-up
  • Light layer if staying late
  • Small reusable bag for wet swimwear

A useful tote beats a tiny decorative bag on an actual beach day.

What not to wear to Bondi Beach

Heavy synthetic clothes on a hot day. You will notice every poor fabric decision by lunchtime.

Only swimwear if you plan to spend hours away from the sand. Take a real layer.

Uncomfortable shoes. Bondi involves more walking than many visitors expect.

Anything so precious you’re worried about sand, salt or sunscreen touching it. That is not relaxing.

An outfit designed entirely for photographs. It still has to survive the actual beach.

Do you need activewear at Bondi Beach?

Only if you are doing something active. Running gear, bike shorts, leggings and training tops make complete sense if you are walking, running or exercising around the beachfront. They are not compulsory beachwear.

Bondi has an athletic side, but that does not mean every visitor needs to look as though they are late for Pilates.

Can you wear swimwear away from the sand?

Around the beachfront, you will obviously see people moving between the beach, promenade and nearby facilities in swimwear. Once you are properly heading into cafés, shops or restaurants, add a cover-up or normal clothes.

Swimsuit + shirt + shorts or trousers + shoes. Nothing complicated required.

A practical one-outfit Bondi beach day

If I were packing for beach, coffee and lunch without returning to the hotel, I would do this:

Women: one-piece swimsuit, loose cotton shirt, relaxed shorts, flat sandals, sunglasses and a tote. Carry a light knit if staying late.

Men: swim shorts, linen or cotton shirt, clean sandals or sneakers, sunglasses and a cap.

If the coastal walk is part of the plan, wear sneakers instead. That is Bondi dressing at its most useful: nothing needs to be changed completely; pieces are simply added as the day changes.

A quick word about swimming

Bondi is beautiful, but it is an ocean beach and conditions matter.

Waverley Council provides professional lifeguard patrols year-round. Current patrol hours are 6am to 7pm from October to April and 7am to 5.30pm from May to September. Council advises swimmers to swim during patrol hours and between the red-and-yellow flags. If there are no flags, Council recommends not swimming. Check Waverley Council’s beach safety advice.

Surfboards and other hard surf craft should stay outside the flagged swimming area. Waverley Council also advises surfers to check beach signage and speak to lifeguards if they are unsure about conditions. Current surf and beach safety information is available here.

Smoking and alcohol are not permitted on the beach. Waverley Council lists the current beach rules here.

The Olivia Rule

Wear something that still makes sense five minutes after you leave the sand.

That is really all there is to it. Good swimwear, one excellent shirt, useful shorts or trousers, comfortable shoes and proper sun protection will take care of almost every Bondi beach day.

If you are spending several days in the area, our What to Wear in Bondi guide covers cafés, coastal walks and evenings in more detail, while our Bondi packing list will stop you bringing three extra pairs of shoes for absolutely no reason.

And if there is still room in the beach bag after the sunscreen, water and towel? Darling, you already know my position on the caviar.
