What to Wear by Destination

Practical clothing advice for where you’re actually going: weather, shoes, nights out and what to pack.

The right outfit changes with the destination. Brisbane heat is different from a Melbourne winter, a Noosa holiday needs different clothes from a week in Japan, and tropical places like Bali, Singapore and Far North Queensland bring their own mix of heat, humidity, rain and venue rules.

Pick a destination below for what to wear, what to pack, the seasons, footwear, evenings out and the occasions you’re likely to meet. Each card links to its season, dinner, wedding and packing guides.

How the destination changes what you wear

Temperature is only part of the answer. Two places with the same daytime high can still need very different wardrobes.

Humidity

Breathable, quick-drying fabrics matter far more in the tropics. Linen and light cotton beat anything heavy or clingy.

Sun

A proper hat, sunglasses and more clothing coverage matter where UV is strong, which is most of Australia.

Wind

Coastal places feel cooler than the number suggests, especially after sunset. A packable shell or light knit fixes it.

Walking

Cities you explore on foot make comfortable shoes the most important item in the bag. See our shoe guide.

Venues

Resort restaurants, city bars, weddings and business settings often want a more polished version of your daytime clothes. See smart casual.

Local expectations

Some destinations expect more coverage at religious or cultural sites, like Bali temples and Thai temples.

Plan the rest of the trip

Know where you’re going? Start with the destination guide, then narrow it down by season, occasion or packing. For the bag itself, see what to pack and travel guides; packing cubes keep day, evening and beach clothes separate. For weather-led advice, see weather and seasons.
