What to Wear to Stakes Day 2026

The Champions Stakes Day dress code, garden-party racewear and easy outfits for women and men.

What should you wear to Stakes Day 2026? Think polished garden-party racewear, rather than the sharper formality of Derby Day or the fashion theatre of Melbourne Cup Day.

TAB Champions Stakes Day is Saturday 7 November 2026 at Flemington Racecourse, closing Melbourne Cup Carnival week. The Victoria Racing Club describes the day’s fashion as relaxed yet stylish, with playful patterns, interesting textures and easy-to-wear tailoring. The official flower is the red poppy.

Women

A polished midi dress, pantsuit, jumpsuit or tailored separates, with comfortable race-day shoes and optional millinery.

Men

A lightweight suit or tailored jacket and trousers with a collared shirt. A tie is required in the Members Enclosure.

The key difference from earlier in Cup Week: Stakes Day lets you relax the styling without looking casual. This article contains affiliate links to Amazon Australia. If you buy through them, What to Wear may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you.

Is Stakes Day now called Champions Stakes Day?

Yes. The final Saturday of the Melbourne Cup Carnival has long been known as Stakes Day; the current official name is TAB Champions Stakes Day. Searching “Stakes Day dress code” or “Champions Stakes Day” means the same Saturday.

Don’t confuse it with Turnbull Stakes Day, a separate Flemington meeting earlier in spring (Saturday 3 October in 2026).

What is the Stakes Day dress style in 2026?

The VRC gives Champions Stakes Day a different fashion identity from the first three days of Cup Week: a garden-party atmosphere with playful patterns, interesting textures, easy-to-wear tailoring and relaxed but stylish racewear.

That makes it a great day for colour, print and softer tailoring without every accessory needing to make a statement.

The safe Stakes Day outfit

Women: a midi dress, polished jumpsuit or tailored separates in a spring print, fresh colour or sophisticated neutral; block heels, low slingbacks or refined flats; a small structured bag; lighter millinery than you’d choose for Cup Day.

Men: a lightweight navy, grey, olive or soft-blue suit; a crisp collared shirt; a tie if your enclosure requires one; polished loafers or dress shoes; and a restrained pocket square.

Think elegant garden party at Flemington. Not beach casual, not nightclub, and not necessarily Derby Day formality.

What should women wear to Stakes Day 2026?

Women have plenty of options because the style direction is deliberately more relaxed: printed or solid midi dresses, tailored pantsuits, wide-leg trousers with a polished blouse, coordinated skirt-and-top sets and structured jumpsuits. It’s one of the easiest Cup Week days to wear something you’ll genuinely wear again. A beautiful floral midi, a clean trouser suit or an elegant printed dress all look at home.

Can you wear a pantsuit to Stakes Day?

Absolutely; easy tailoring fits the official style particularly well. Try soft-blue suit + ivory shell + low heel + structured bag, or cream trousers + printed blouse + lightweight blazer + flat slingback. Keep it polished without looking like workwear.

Do you have to wear a hat or fascinator?

No. Millinery is still part of Carnival dressing, but Stakes Day is where it can relax: a brimmed hat, smaller pillbox, sculptural headband, bow or restrained fascinator. If you’ve already worn dramatic millinery to Derby, Cup or Oaks Day, this is the day to simplify.

Three easy women’s Stakes Day outfits

The garden-party dress

Printed midi dress + low block heel + small structured bag + understated headband or brimmed hat.

The modern suit

Soft-green, pale-blue or cream pantsuit + simple shell + pointed flat or slingback + small earrings.

The repeat-Cup-Week outfit

A dress you’ve already worn this season + different shoes + simpler millinery + a different bag.

What colours should you wear to Stakes Day?

There’s no signature monochrome like Derby Day, and you’re not steered to soft pastels as on Oaks Day. You have real freedom: red, green, cobalt, soft blue, coral, yellow, cream, navy, and floral or geometric prints. The red poppy is the official flower, so red works well as an accent through a bag, tie, shoe, poppy brooch or headwear; you don’t need head-to-toe red.

What should men wear to Stakes Day 2026?

Stakes Day is one of the easiest Cup Week days for men to relax the palette: navy, mid- or light grey, olive, soft blue, stone or subtle checks. A white or pale-blue shirt keeps the base clean; add interest with a textured or small-pattern tie, a pocket square and brown or oxblood leather shoes.

Light-grey suit + pale-blue shirt + green textured tie + brown loafers.
Or: navy suit + white shirt + red or burgundy tie + dark-brown shoes.

Do men need to wear a tie?

It depends on your ticket. Flemington has no formal dress regulations for general-public ticket holders. In the Members Enclosure, men must wear appropriate tailoring with a collared dress shirt, tie or bow tie and dress shoes. An open-collar suit can be fine in general admission but wrong for Members.

More in what men should wear to the races.

General admission vs Members Enclosure

This matters as much on Stakes Day as on Cup Day. “Stakes Day is more relaxed” never means “the dress rules no longer apply”.

AreaWhat applies
General publicNo formal dress regulations, though racegoers are encouraged to dress for the occasion. You can read the garden-party style more casually, but it’s still a major Carnival day.
Members Enclosure (Club Stand, Grandstand, Members Lawn, Members Betting Ring, Members car parks, The Birdcage)Men: tailoring, collared dress shirt, tie or bow tie, dress shoes. Women: excluded items include short jumpsuits and playsuits, shorts above the knee, belly-button-exposing garments, bralettes and bandeau crop tops, runners and sports shoes, thongs, denim, untailored trousers and ripped clothing.
Corporate hospitality and diningFormal standards apply: men generally need tailoring, a tie and dress shoes; women should maintain suitable racewear standards.

Rules change, so check the current Flemington dress regulations and your ticket conditions. More in our Spring Racing Carnival dress code guide.

What shoes should women wear?

Comfort matters on the final day of Cup Week: Flemington means walking, standing and grass. Choose block heels, wider heels, low slingbacks, pointed or ballet flats, or dressy wedges. Stilettos are unforgiving on turf; heel protectors help. See our shoe guide.

Can women wear flats?

Yes. The garden-party mood makes refined flats especially natural: pointed slingbacks, ballet flats, elegant loafers or low pumps. They still need to look polished in formal areas.

Can you wear sneakers?

Possibly in general admission; not in the Members Enclosure, where joggers, sports shoes, track shoes and runners are prohibited. A designer sneaker is still a sneaker for dress-code purposes.

Fabrics and Melbourne spring weather

Early November fabrics should suit Melbourne spring: linen blends, lightweight wool, silk blends, crepe, structured cotton and light jacquard. The garden-party direction rewards texture: a subtly textured suit, woven bag or printed silk adds personality without extra formality.

Saturday 7 November is still Melbourne in spring. Plan for cool mornings, warm sun, wind, showers and a noticeable temperature change. A lightweight blazer, trench, cropped jacket or elegant wrap that belongs with the outfit beats a last-minute casual jacket. See what to wear in Melbourne in spring.

Staying for FISHER after racing?

After the last race, FISHER plays The Elms Live Stage, with entry included for general admission. Choose an outfit that still works once the hat comes off, and shoes you can stand in well past 5.50pm.

Is Stakes Day family-friendly?

Traditionally, yes. The VRC notes it has long been called family day, with children dressing up too. That doesn’t mean ordinary weekend clothes in a formal enclosure.

Can you repeat a Carnival outfit?

Absolutely; Stakes Day may be the easiest day for it. Change the shoes, bag, headwear, jewellery or jacket. Men can repeat a navy or grey suit with a new shirt, tie and pocket square.

What not to wear to Stakes Day 2026

AvoidWhy
Anything that breaches your enclosure’s rulesRelaxed styling isn’t relaxed entry requirements.
Very casual beachwearGarden party doesn’t mean resort pool.
Brand-new painful shoesEspecially if you’re staying for the music.
Fine heels without thinking about grassFlemington still has turf on Saturday.
An excessively formal outfitStakes Day is the easier, more relaxed fashion day.
Too many playful elements at oncePrint, texture and colour still need editing.
A random fascinatorIf the outfit looks better without it, leave it off.
Ignoring the weatherNovember in Melbourne deserves a plan B.

Arabella’s Stakes Day 2026 rule

The final Saturday of Cup Week should look like you made an effort but no longer feel compelled to prove anything. Choose the polished dress you can walk in. Wear the good flats if your feet need them. Repeat the suit. Choose the smaller hat. Use print or colour if you enjoy it.

Stakes Day style works best when it feels easy without looking accidental.
