How to Wear Chartreuse

The colours that calm it, the colours that clash it on purpose, and outfits for work and weekends.

The easiest way to wear chartreuse is to treat it as the strong colour and keep everything around it simple. Espresso brown, black, denim, navy and Cloud Dancer calm it down. Cobalt, red and teal make a deliberate colour-blocked look.

THE SAFE START

Chartreuse top + dark-brown trousers + simple shoes.

The brown gives the colour enough weight that the outfit looks intentional rather than fluorescent. Try a chartreuse knit with chocolate wide-leg trousers and brown loafers.

Why chartreuse is suddenly everywhere

Chartreuse sits between yellow and green, and it’s one of the most noticeable colours of 2026. Vogue called it spring’s newest “It” colour in March 2026, and Who What Wear named it one of the year’s big colour trends, noting that Simone Rocha, Issey Miyake, Erdem, Saint Laurent, Dries Van Noten, Burberry and Prada all showed it in their Spring/Summer 2026 collections.

You don’t have to wear it head to toe. A shoe, bag, knit or skirt does enough.

Combinations are where you get stuck? See our guide to colours that go together.

Chartreuse + espresso brown

The easiest combination if chartreuse feels intimidating. Brown takes the sharpness out of the yellow-green and gives it a warmer, richer base.

  • Chartreuse knit + chocolate trousers + brown loafers
  • Chartreuse blouse + espresso skirt + dark-brown bag
  • Chocolate dress + chartreuse shoes

Wear a lot of brown already? Our espresso brown guide has more combinations with strong colours.

The calm pairings

+ Cloud Dancer

Soft white gives chartreuse space without the harshness of brilliant white. See how to wear Cloud Dancer.

• Chartreuse shirt + Cloud Dancer trousers
• Soft-white dress + chartreuse bag
• Chartreuse skirt + Cloud Dancer knit + brown flats

+ black

The strongest easy contrast, useful when the chartreuse piece already has plenty of personality.

• Chartreuse knit + black trousers + loafers
• Chartreuse dress + black slingbacks
• Black dress + chartreuse flats

+ denim

Makes chartreuse feel normal enough for every day. Mid-blue is relaxed; dark denim is sharper.

• Chartreuse knit + straight jeans + brown loafers
• Chartreuse shirt + faded denim + simple flats
• Denim dress + chartreuse bag

+ navy

Contrast without the graphic edge of black.

• Chartreuse blouse + navy trousers
• Navy dress + chartreuse shoes
• Chartreuse knit + dark-navy skirt

Chartreuse + cobalt blue

One of the strongest combinations of the year. Both colours are saturated, so let one take up more of the outfit than the other.

  • Cobalt dress + chartreuse shoes
  • Chartreuse knit + cobalt skirt or trousers + neutral bag
  • Cobalt jacket + Cloud Dancer outfit + chartreuse bag

Want the blue to lead? See our guide to wearing cobalt blue.

The bold pairings

+ red

Red and chartreuse sound louder together than they look. Make the colour-blocking deliberate and keep the third colour quiet. We use the same idea in shoes with a red dress.

• Red dress + chartreuse sandals + neutral bag
• Chartreuse skirt + red knit + brown shoes
• Red trousers + cream top + chartreuse flats

+ teal

Both contain green but sit at very different brightness. Want teal to lead? See how to wear teal.

• Deep teal trousers + chartreuse knit
• Teal dress + chartreuse flats
• Chartreuse bag + teal jacket + soft-white base

Chartreuse tops, skirts and dresses

A chartreuse top

The easiest big dose, because everything below stays familiar. Try a chartreuse blouse + chocolate trousers, a knit + dark jeans, a shirt + black skirt, or a tee + navy trousers. If the colour is very acidic, darker trousers balance it.

A chartreuse skirt

A bigger colour block, still easy with a simple top: a chartreuse midi skirt + Cloud Dancer knit + brown flats, a skirt + black tank + loafers, or a skirt + denim shirt + neutral shoes.

A chartreuse dress

A chartreuse dress already supplies the colour. Easy shoes: black, brown, tan, metallic, soft white or navy; cobalt or red for something stronger. If the shape is dramatic, keep accessories simple.

Start small with shoes or a bag

The easiest way in if you like the colour but don’t want it near your face. There’s no need to repeat it elsewhere in the outfit.

Chartreuse for work and smart casual

At work

Easiest inside a familiar work outfit: chartreuse blouse + charcoal trousers, chartreuse knit + navy skirt, or chartreuse shirt + chocolate trousers + loafers. In a conservative office, a bag, scarf or shoe is lower risk. See business casual.

Smart casual

The rest of the outfit can stay simple: chartreuse knit + dark trousers + loafers, chartreuse skirt + cream shirt + flats, or a simple dress + chartreuse shoes + a neutral structured bag. See smart casual.

How to stop chartreuse looking fluorescent or sporty

Add depth

Put it beside colours with weight: espresso brown, charcoal, navy, black and dark denim ground it far more than other brights.

Choose texture

Knitwear, suede, satin or heavier tailoring look very different from a thin neon synthetic.

Watch the silhouette

Yellow-green is common in sportswear and hi-vis, so choose fine knits, midi skirts, structured shirts, tailored trousers, leather shoes and structured bags, with polished shoes.

The rule of thumb

Let chartreuse be the interesting part of the outfit.

Use espresso brown, black, denim, navy or soft white when you want it easy. Add cobalt, red or teal when you want stronger colour-blocking. Your wardrobe doesn’t need to turn acid green: treat chartreuse as a real wardrobe colour, not a sportswear or costume one. And if you’re not ready for a chartreuse dress, start at your feet.
