Dinner in Bondi is usually relaxed, but it is not quite beachwear territory.
The safest approach is elevated casual: good trousers, a simple dress, a clean shirt, polished flats or sneakers, and perhaps a light layer once the sea breeze arrives.
You rarely need to look formally dressed. You do want to look as though you have finished swimming.
Bondi has everything from casual neighbourhood restaurants to genuinely special-occasion dining, so the restaurant matters more than any supposed Bondi dress code.
The quick answer
For women, a reliable Bondi dinner outfit is:
Relaxed trousers or a simple midi dress + fitted top or light shirt + flat sandals, loafers or clean sneakers.
For men:
Relaxed trousers or dark jeans + a good T-shirt, polo or casual collared shirt + clean sneakers or loafers.
On a hot summer night, tailored shorts can work at many casual restaurants. For somewhere more polished, choose trousers instead.
That is the basic Bondi dinner formula: clean, pared-back and one step smarter than what you wore to the beach.
How dressed up is dinner in Bondi?
Not very, in most cases.
Bondi’s dining scene ranges from very relaxed places opposite the sand to high-end restaurants overlooking the ocean. Destination NSW’s current Bondi dining guide includes casual beachside restaurants alongside more polished venues such as Icebergs Dining Room and Bar and Sean’s.
See Destination NSW’s current Bondi food and drink guide.
So rather than asking, “What do people wear to dinner in Bondi?”, ask:
How nice is the restaurant I am actually going to?
For a casual trattoria, neighbourhood restaurant or early dinner after the beach, relaxed clothes are fine.
For a date night, celebration or one of Bondi’s more expensive dining rooms, move towards polished separates or a good dress.
Still Bondi. Just cleaner.
What women can wear to dinner in Bondi
You do not need cocktail dressing for an ordinary Bondi dinner.
Some of the easiest combinations are:
- wide-leg trousers + fitted tank + flat sandals
- simple midi dress + small shoulder bag
- dark jeans + blouse or neat knit + loafers
- linen trousers + camisole + oversized shirt
- midi skirt + plain fitted tee + jewellery
- simple mini dress + light jacket + flats
The outfit can be quite simple.
A clean silhouette, good fabric and one or two considered details generally look more at home here than an outfit overloaded with evening accessories.
What men can wear to dinner in Bondi
Men can usually keep things equally straightforward.
A very safe formula is:
Relaxed trousers + good T-shirt or polo + clean sneakers.
Other combinations that work:
- dark jeans + casual shirt
- chinos + knitted polo
- lightweight trousers + linen shirt
- tailored shorts + short-sleeved shirt on a warm casual evening
- trousers + tee + lightweight overshirt
A blazer is rarely necessary unless the restaurant, event or occasion genuinely calls for one.
There is also no need to accidentally turn yourself into someone heading to a corporate networking function.
What to wear to a casual Bondi restaurant
This is the easiest category.
Think pizza, pasta, Japanese, tacos, casual seafood or a neighbourhood restaurant where the atmosphere matters more than formality.
For women:
- jeans + tank + oversized shirt
- relaxed trousers + tee
- simple cotton dress + sandals
- shorts + neat top on a hot evening
For men:
- chinos or jeans + T-shirt
- tailored shorts + linen shirt
- relaxed trousers + polo
- clean sneakers
Some Bondi restaurants explicitly describe their dress code as casual. The broader lesson is not that absolutely anything goes; it is that there is little benefit in overdressing for an obviously relaxed venue.
What to wear somewhere nicer
This is where I would turn the dial up once, not five times.
Destination NSW describes Icebergs Dining Room and Bar as high-end beachside dining with professional service, which is a useful example of the smarter end of Bondi’s restaurant scene.
See the current Destination NSW listing for Icebergs.
For women, try:
- midi dress + elegant flat sandals or low heels
- tailored trousers + fitted top
- silk-look skirt + simple knit or tank
- minimal dress + understated jewellery
For men:
- tailored or relaxed trousers + collared shirt
- chinos + knitted polo
- dark trousers + quality tee and overshirt
- loafers or clean minimal sneakers, depending on the venue
You still do not need to dress as though you are attending a formal wedding.
The difference is mainly cleaner tailoring, better shoes and fewer obvious beach pieces.
What to wear for a Bondi date night
Bondi is quite good at date-night dressing because trying too hard can actually work against you.
For women, I like:
Black or cream trousers + fitted tank + jewellery + flat sandal.
Or:
A simple midi dress + small bag + light jacket.
For men:
Dark trousers + knitted polo or casual shirt + clean shoes.
The aim is polished without looking ceremonially polished.
And if the evening might end with a walk along the beachfront, choose footwear that does not make that suggestion immediately regrettable.
Can you wear jeans to dinner in Bondi?
Absolutely.
Dark or clean-cut denim is particularly easy for cooler evenings.
For women, pair jeans with:
- a fitted knit
- simple blouse
- tank and blazer or lightweight jacket
- good sandals or loafers
For men:
- plain tee and overshirt
- casual collared shirt
- knitted polo
- clean sneakers or loafers
Distressed beach-day denim is a different proposition from a clean pair of dark jeans.
Same fabric. Very different dinner.
Can you wear shorts to dinner?
Yes, depending on the restaurant and weather.
On a warm summer evening, tailored or neat relaxed shorts are entirely believable at casual Bondi restaurants.
Women can pair them with a tank, shirt or neat top.
Men can wear them with a linen shirt, polo or good T-shirt.
For a more expensive restaurant, anniversary dinner or special occasion, trousers are the safer choice.
The crucial distinction is between shorts chosen as clothing and whatever swim shorts happen to still be wet.
Can you wear sneakers?
Yes, and in many cases they are the sensible choice.
Clean, low-profile sneakers work well with:
- trousers
- dark denim
- simple dresses
- skirts
- casual shirts
They are particularly useful if your evening involves walking between Campbell Parade, Hall Street and the surrounding streets.
The sneakers do not have to be pristine museum exhibits.
They should simply look intentional rather than like the pair you wore running the coastal walk that morning.
Do women need heels for dinner in Bondi?
No.
Not remotely.
Flat leather sandals, loafers, sleek sneakers, ballet flats and low heels can all work.
Wear higher heels if you enjoy them and they suit the restaurant.
Do not wear them because you think Bondi dinner has a secret footwear examination at the door.
It does not.
What to wear from beach to dinner
Now we have reached the important Bondi question.
You have been at the beach all afternoon and dinner is at six.
Do you need to return to your accommodation?
Not necessarily.
But you do need to dry off.
For women, a good beach-to-dinner formula is:
One-piece swimsuit + relaxed linen trousers + oversized cotton shirt + flat sandals.
Carry dry underwear and perhaps a small top if you would rather not use the swimsuit as the evening base layer.
For men:
Swim shorts that can pass as casual shorts + clean linen shirt + proper sandals or sneakers.
If the shorts are still obviously wet, change them.
There is a limit to what even an excellent linen shirt can rescue.
For the daytime half of that equation, see our What to Wear to Bondi Beach guide.
What to wear to dinner in Bondi in summer
Summer is about fabric first.
Choose:
- linen
- cotton
- lightweight dresses
- relaxed trousers
- tailored shorts
- flat sandals
- lightweight shirts
For women, a linen trouser and tank combination is difficult to beat.
For men, lightweight trousers or neat shorts with a linen shirt work almost everywhere on the casual side of Bondi dining.
You can find more hot-weather combinations in our What to Wear in Bondi in Summer guide.
What to wear in winter
Winter dinner requires actual layers.
Try:
- dark denim
- relaxed trousers
- knitwear
- boots or sneakers
- casual jackets
- lightweight coats
For women, straight-leg trousers with a fitted knit and jacket work beautifully.
For men, dark trousers, a tee or polo and a casual jacket are easy.
Bondi may look sunny in photographs all year round. That is not an instruction to go to dinner in July wearing linen shorts.
Spring and autumn dinner outfits
This is when layers matter most.
The temperature during sunset drinks can be quite different from the temperature when you leave the restaurant.
Start with:
- dress
- tank and trousers
- tee and jeans
- shirt and chinos
Then add:
- overshirt
- light knit
- denim jacket
- lightweight bomber
Our Bondi spring guide covers that day-to-evening temperature problem in more detail.
What colours work for dinner in Bondi?
Bondi evening style suits a clean palette:
- black
- white
- navy
- cream
- chocolate
- olive
- pale blue
- denim
But there is absolutely no reason to eliminate colour.
Red, cobalt, green or a strong print can look excellent.
If the colour is doing plenty, let the silhouette stay simple.
What not to wear to dinner in Bondi
Wet swimwear
Dry off or change.
A beach towel as an accessory
The towel has completed its shift.
Flimsy beach thongs somewhere genuinely polished
Choose a proper sandal or other shoe.
Very formal clothes for a neighbourhood restaurant
You may spend the night wondering why everyone else looks so comfortable.
Uncomfortable shoes
Dinner may involve considerably more walking than you expected.
An elaborate interpretation of “Bondi chic”
There is no such uniform.
Three easy Bondi dinner outfits
Casual dinner
Women: dark jeans + fitted tank + oversized shirt + sandals.
Men: chinos + good T-shirt + clean sneakers.
Date night
Women: simple midi dress + jewellery + flat sandals.
Men: relaxed trousers + knitted polo + loafers or clean sneakers.
Smarter restaurant
Women: tailored trousers + elegant top + low heel or polished flat.
Men: tailored trousers + collared shirt + loafers or minimal sneakers.
If you do not know where you are eating yet
Wear the middle outfit.
For women:
Black or cream trousers + fitted tank + oversized shirt + polished flat footwear.
For men:
Dark relaxed trousers + plain tee or polo + overshirt + clean sneakers.
Both outfits are casual enough for a neighbourhood restaurant and polished enough for somewhere nicer without requiring a trip home.
This is also the useful strategy if dinner may turn into drinks afterwards. Our What to Wear Out in Bondi guide covers the later part of the evening.
The Olivia rule for dinner in Bondi
Dress one step smarter than the beach, then let the restaurant decide whether you need another.
Most Bondi dinners do not require formal dressing. They reward clothes that are simple, polished and comfortable enough for a coastal suburb where walking is still part of the evening.
A good pair of trousers, a simple dress, a clean shirt and shoes you actually enjoy wearing will cover an enormous amount of territory.
If you are staying in Bondi for a few days, our What to Wear in Bondi guide covers the rest of the day, while the Bondi packing list will stop dinner from becoming an excuse to bring seven pairs of shoes.
One pair is for dinner.
The remaining suitcase space, naturally, is reserved for the caviar.
