What to Wear to Dinner in Sydney
For most dinners in Sydney, smart casual is a safe starting point — but you often don’t need to dress that formally.
A neighbourhood restaurant in Newtown, dinner in Surry Hills, a waterfront table at Circular Quay and an expensive evening at Barangaroo can all mean quite different things when someone says “let’s go out for dinner”.
If you don’t know the restaurant well, the easiest Sydney dinner formula is:
Wear polished casual clothes, good shoes and one piece that lifts the outfit above what you’d wear sightseeing.
For women, that might be tailored trousers and a polished top, a simple dress, or a skirt with flats, loafers, sandals or heels. For men, trousers or dark jeans with an open-collar shirt, polo or fine knit work in an enormous number of Sydney restaurants.
You usually do not need a jacket and tie. You usually do not need heels either.
What matters most is the actual restaurant.
For the broader city wardrobe, see What to Wear in Sydney. If the restaurant specifically says smart casual, see our Smart Casual Dress Code guide.
Sydney restaurant dress codes at a glance
| Type of dinner | What I’d wear |
|---|---|
| Casual neighbourhood restaurant | Good jeans or trousers, neat top or shirt, sneakers, sandals or boots |
| Surry Hills dinner | Relaxed polished outfit with denim, trousers, dress, boots or smart sneakers |
| Newtown / Inner West | Individual casual style; don’t overthink it |
| CBD restaurant | Polished casual to smart casual |
| Circular Quay / harbour dinner | Smart casual plus a weather-appropriate layer |
| Barangaroo | Refined smart casual |
| Fine dining | Polished smart casual unless the venue states otherwise |
| Birthday / anniversary dinner | One step dressier than the venue minimum |
How dressed up are Sydney restaurants?
Less than visitors sometimes expect.
Sydney has serious restaurants, expensive restaurants and spectacular dining rooms, but that does not automatically mean formal clothing.
One useful example is ARIA Sydney, one of the city’s best-known harbour restaurants. Its current FAQ is unusually straightforward: it says there is no dress code and guests should wear what they are comfortable in.
That doesn’t mean everyone arrives for dinner in beachwear. It means Sydney fine dining can be much less rule-bound than people assume.
At the other end of the spectrum, some precincts do impose standards. Crown Sydney says smart casual attire is welcome and specifically does not permit rubber thongs in its restaurants, bars and casino.
So rather than asking “what do Sydney restaurants allow?”, ask:
- How expensive is the restaurant?
- Is it a special-occasion place?
- Is it inside a hotel or luxury precinct?
- Are we going somewhere afterwards?
- Does the restaurant publish its own dress code?
That will tell you far more than the postcode alone.
What women can wear to dinner in Sydney
You have plenty of room between jeans and a cocktail dress.
Reliable combinations include:
- tailored trousers + fitted or draped top + loafers
- wide-leg trousers + sleeveless top + flat sandals
- midi dress + flats, boots or low heels
- dark jeans + blouse + blazer
- skirt + knit or polished top
- simple dress + statement earrings + good flats
The simplest way to judge the outfit is to remove the accessories mentally.
If the clothes underneath still look intentional, you’re probably in the right territory.
Do women need heels for Sydney restaurants?
No.
Wear heels if you enjoy wearing them or they suit the occasion. They are not a requirement for looking dressed up in Sydney.
Loafers, polished flats, ankle boots and smart sandals can all work beautifully for dinner.
And remember that your evening may involve walking from a station, ferry wharf or nearby bar.
A shoe you cannot comfortably walk three Sydney blocks in is less versatile than it first appears.
What men can wear to dinner in Sydney
For most restaurants, I’d start with:
trousers or dark jeans + collared shirt, knit polo or polished T-shirt + loafers or clean sneakers.
If the restaurant is more expensive or the occasion matters, move one element up:
- dark jeans → tailored trousers
- T-shirt → open-collar shirt or knit polo
- sneakers → loafers or smarter leather shoes
- casual overshirt → structured jacket
You rarely need to jump directly to a suit.
Do men need a jacket for dinner in Sydney?
Usually not.
A jacket can make sense for a particularly good restaurant, a business dinner, an anniversary or a winter evening, but it is not a universal Sydney dining requirement.
Even around the Sydney Opera House, formality is less rigid than the setting can suggest. The Opera House itself describes the precinct as informal for general visits, and Bennelong operates as a major fine-dining restaurant inside the building without the surrounding precinct imposing a blanket formal dress rule.
If the restaurant doesn’t request a jacket, consider it an option rather than an obligation.
What to wear to dinner at Circular Quay
Circular Quay is one of the places where I’d lean a little more polished, especially for a proper sit-down dinner.
Not because there is an official Circular Quay dress code.
There isn’t.
It’s because many of the restaurants here are destination restaurants, harbour-view venues or places people choose for celebrations.
Women could wear:
- midi dress + flats or heels
- tailored trousers + blouse
- skirt + polished top + light jacket
Men could wear:
- tailored trousers + open-collar shirt
- chinos + knit polo
- dark jeans + good shirt + jacket for a more relaxed restaurant
The practical issue is the harbour. Bring a layer if you’re walking around before or after dinner, especially outside summer.
What to wear to dinner near the Sydney Opera House
There is no need to treat dinner near the Opera House as black tie simply because of the architecture.
ARIA, directly opposite the Opera House, currently says it has no dress code at all.
Inside the Opera House itself, Bennelong is a proper fine-dining destination. For somewhere at that level, I would still personally choose polished smart casual even if a jacket and tie are not required.
For women:
simple dress or tailored separates + polished shoes + light outer layer.
For men:
tailored trousers + collared shirt or knit polo + loafers, with an optional jacket.
If dinner is part of a performance night, this level also moves easily into the theatre afterwards.
What to wear to dinner in Barangaroo
Barangaroo is where I’d shift the baseline slightly upwards.
There are casual restaurants here too, but the precinct also includes expensive waterfront dining, hotel restaurants and Crown Sydney.
A useful Barangaroo default is:
refined smart casual.
For women, think a midi dress, tailored trousers, polished separates, smart sandals, loafers or heels.
For men, tailored trousers or chinos with a shirt or knit polo and loafers or clean minimal sneakers are safe.
If you’re dining within Crown Sydney, check its current dress standards before leaving. Crown says smart casual attire is welcome and does not permit rubber thongs in restaurants or bars.
What to wear to dinner in Surry Hills
Surry Hills gives you more flexibility.
There are serious restaurants here, but the neighbourhood generally doesn’t demand obvious formality.
A very Sydney Surry Hills dinner outfit could be:
dark jeans + polished top + interesting jacket + loafers or boots.
Or:
relaxed trousers + good T-shirt or shirt + smart sneakers.
You can look considered without looking formal.
What to wear to dinner in Newtown and the Inner West
Don’t overdress simply because you’re going to a highly rated restaurant.
Newtown and much of the Inner West are comfortable with a more individual, relaxed approach.
Denim, vintage pieces, relaxed trousers, boots, sneakers, dresses and casual tailoring all work.
The restaurant itself still matters, but there’s less pressure here to translate “nice dinner” into conventional polish.
Wear the better version of your own clothes.
What to wear to a casual Sydney dinner
For pizza, casual Thai, a neighbourhood bistro, ramen, pub dinner or similar, you can keep things very relaxed.
Women:
- jeans + T-shirt + flats or sneakers
- casual dress + sandals
- trousers + tank + overshirt
Men:
- jeans + T-shirt + sneakers
- chinos + polo
- casual trousers + short-sleeve shirt
You do not need to manufacture an evening outfit where the restaurant doesn’t require one.
What to wear to fine dining in Sydney
Fine dining is where I’d lean polished even when the restaurant doesn’t technically require it.
The aim isn’t to satisfy an imaginary rule.
It’s that a special restaurant is often a special night, and your outfit can reflect that without becoming formalwear.
Women:
- midi or column dress
- tailored trousers + elegant top
- skirt + blouse or refined knit
- jumpsuit with polished shoes
Men:
- tailored trousers + open-collar shirt
- trousers + knit polo + jacket
- dark tailored separates + loafers
A tie is generally unnecessary unless the occasion or restaurant specifically calls for one.
ARIA is a good reminder not to invent rules that venues themselves don’t have: its current FAQ explicitly says there is no dress code. That doesn’t stop you dressing beautifully for dinner there. It just means you are dressing for the occasion, not passing an entrance exam.
What to wear for a birthday or anniversary dinner
This is one situation where I’d deliberately go one step above the minimum.
If the restaurant is casual, wear polished casual.
If it is smart casual, lean into the smarter end.
If it’s fine dining, wear something that makes the night feel like an occasion.
You don’t need sequins, a suit or uncomfortable shoes unless that’s what you want.
A stronger dress, interesting jacket, jewellery, polished shoe or excellent shirt can do enough.
What to wear for dinner and drinks afterwards
If the night may continue after dinner, avoid building an outfit that only works while seated at the table.
You want enough polish for the restaurant and enough comfort for walking to a bar afterwards.
Useful combinations include:
- tailored trousers + good top + loafers
- simple dress + boots or comfortable heels
- dark jeans + shirt + structured jacket
- trousers + knit polo + clean leather sneakers
For the full nightlife version, see What to Wear Out in Sydney.
What to wear to dinner in Sydney in summer
The trick in summer is looking polished without dressing heavily.
Use:
- linen
- lightweight cotton
- breathable dresses
- light trousers
- short-sleeve shirts
- knit polos
- smart sandals
- loafers
A blazer is optional, not compulsory.
If you’re walking fifteen minutes to the restaurant in January, the outfit has to survive the walk.
Women could wear a lightweight midi dress with sandals. Men could wear light trousers with a linen shirt and loafers.
See What to Wear in Sydney in Summer for more hot-weather advice.
What to wear to dinner in Sydney in winter
Winter makes restaurant dressing easier because your coat or jacket can do much of the work.
Try:
- tailored trousers + knit + wool coat
- midi dress + boots + coat
- dark jeans + blouse + blazer
- chinos + shirt + jacket
- tailored trousers + knit polo + coat
The harbour can feel cooler than the temperature suggests, particularly when you’re walking before or after dinner.
See What to Wear in Sydney in Winter.
Can you wear jeans to dinner in Sydney?
Yes, in a large number of restaurants.
Dark, clean or well-kept denim gives you the most range.
The rest of the outfit determines how the jeans read.
Jeans + faded gym T-shirt + running shoes is very casual.
Dark jeans + polished top or shirt + structured jacket + good shoes can easily reach smart casual.
For an important fine-dining booking, tailored trousers remove any uncertainty.
Can you wear sneakers to Sydney restaurants?
Often, yes.
Clean, understated sneakers are common in Sydney restaurants and can work with otherwise polished outfits.
But not every venue treats all sneakers the same way, and a battered running shoe reads very differently from a clean minimal sneaker.
For somewhere especially expensive or conservative, loafers, boots, flats, sandals or dress shoes give you more certainty.
Can you wear thongs to dinner in Sydney?
At a very casual beachside or neighbourhood venue, possibly.
As a general Sydney dinner shoe, I wouldn’t rely on them.
Some venues specifically prohibit rubber thongs. Crown Sydney, for example, does not allow them in its restaurants and bars.
If your day starts at Bondi and dinner is somewhere polished, pack another pair of shoes.

What not to wear to dinner in Sydney
There is no useful city-wide banned list, but a few choices reduce your options.
Beachwear when the restaurant is clearly not a beach restaurant.
Sydney is casual, but the whole city isn’t Bondi.
Rubber thongs as your only evening footwear.
Some venues will accept them and others specifically won’t.
Gym gear for a special dinner.
Activewear is common during the day but doesn’t automatically translate to every evening venue.
A full formal outfit because you assume expensive equals formal.
Some of Sydney’s best restaurants are remarkably relaxed about dress.
Anything so uncomfortable that it ruins dinner.
Appropriate is not the same as painful.
Amelia’s Sydney dinner rule
My rule is:
Dress for the restaurant, then add one small reason for the evening to feel special.
That might be better shoes.
A good jacket.
A stronger dress.
Jewellery.
An excellent shirt.
You don’t need to transform yourself simply because you’ve booked dinner.
Sydney restaurants are generally much more interested in what is happening on the plate than whether you’re wearing a tie.
Frequently asked questions
What is the dress code for restaurants in Sydney?
There is no single Sydney restaurant dress code. Casual restaurants can be very relaxed, while smart casual is a useful default for better restaurants. Always check the individual venue if the booking is important.
Do Sydney fine-dining restaurants require jackets?
Not generally. Some may have their own standards, but a jacket and tie are not universal requirements. ARIA Sydney, for example, currently states that it has no dress code.
Can I wear jeans to a nice restaurant in Sydney?
Often, yes. Choose clean, well-kept denim and pair it with a more polished top, shirt, jacket and shoes. For particularly formal or special-occasion restaurants, tailored trousers give you more certainty.
Can I wear sneakers to dinner in Sydney?
Clean sneakers are accepted at many Sydney restaurants. For fine dining or a restaurant with a stated dress code, check first or choose loafers, boots, flats, sandals or another smarter shoe.
What should a woman wear to dinner in Sydney?
A dress, tailored trousers and a polished top, skirt and blouse, or dark jeans with a better top all work depending on the restaurant. Heels are optional; flats, loafers, boots and smart sandals can be equally appropriate.
What should a man wear to dinner in Sydney?
For most good restaurants, trousers or dark jeans with a collared shirt, knit polo or polished T-shirt work well. Add smarter shoes or a jacket for fine dining or a special occasion.
What should I wear to dinner at Barangaroo?
Refined smart casual is a safe choice: a dress or tailored separates for women, or tailored trousers with a shirt or knit polo for men. Check individual venues, particularly inside Crown Sydney, because specific dress standards may apply.
