What to Wear Out in Bondi

Three Bondi night-out looks: woman in linen shirt and black trousers with sandals; man in green overshirt, navy trousers and white sneakers outside a restaurant; couple in denim jacket over black dress and navy polo with jeans, both in white sneakers, walking a lit-up street at dusk

What to Wear Out in Bondi

Going out in Bondi is usually less formal than going out in central Sydney, but that does not mean turning up in whatever you wore on the sand.

The easiest way to get it right is to think elevated casual: clean lines, good shoes, one polished piece and nothing that looks as though it required a committee meeting.

For most Bondi drinks, dinners and casual nights out, you can leave the formalwear at home.

You just need to look like the beach part of the day has finished.

The quick answer

For women, a reliable Bondi night-out outfit is:

Relaxed trousers or a simple dress + fitted top or light knit + flat sandals, loafers or clean sneakers.

For men:

Relaxed trousers or dark jeans + a good T-shirt, polo or casual shirt + clean sneakers or loafers.

On a warm evening, tailored shorts can work. On a cooler or windy night, add an overshirt, knit or lightweight jacket.

That will take you comfortably through most bars, casual restaurants and drinks around Bondi Beach.

What does “going out” in Bondi actually mean?

This matters, because Bondi nights are not all the same.

You might be:

  • having a sunset drink near the beach
  • meeting friends for a casual dinner
  • going somewhere nicer for a date
  • heading to a pub or bar
  • seeing live music or a performance
  • staying out late somewhere with a dancefloor

Bondi’s official tourism guide describes the area as a mix of beachside cafés, bars, restaurants and more polished dining, which is exactly why there is no single Bondi evening uniform. Destination NSW’s Bondi food and drink guide gives a useful sense of the mix.

The venue matters more than the suburb.

The safest Bondi evening dress code

If you have no idea where the night will end up, aim for something that sits between beach casual and properly dressed up.

For women:

  • black, cream or chocolate trousers
  • fitted tank, knit or simple blouse
  • midi or mini dress
  • dark denim
  • flat sandals, loafers or clean sneakers
  • small shoulder bag or crossbody

For men:

  • dark jeans or relaxed trousers
  • plain tee, polo or casual shirt
  • lightweight overshirt
  • clean sneakers or loafers

The useful word here is clean.

Bondi is relaxed enough that a very simple outfit can work beautifully, but relaxed does not mean damp swim shorts, sandy feet and a towel over one shoulder at 8pm.

What women can wear out in Bondi

You have a lot of room here.

A Bondi evening does not require sequins, high heels or a tiny dress unless that is genuinely what you want to wear.

Some easy combinations:

  • wide-leg trousers + fitted tank + sandals
  • simple black midi dress + flat shoes
  • dark jeans + knit or blouse + loafers
  • linen trousers + camisole + oversized shirt
  • mini dress + lightweight jacket + boots or flats
  • midi skirt + plain tee + jewellery

The silhouette can be simple because the environment is already doing plenty of work.

You are near the ocean. You do not need to arrive dressed as the entertainment.

What men can wear out in Bondi

For men, the difference between daytime and evening can be quite small.

A very easy formula is:

Relaxed trousers + plain tee + overshirt + clean sneakers.

Or:

  • dark jeans + short-sleeved shirt
  • chinos + knitted polo
  • tailored shorts + linen shirt on a warm night
  • trousers + good T-shirt + lightweight jacket

You rarely need a blazer unless the actual restaurant or event calls for one.

And there is no need to turn a casual Bondi dinner into business casual by accident.

What to wear for sunset drinks

Sunset drinks are probably the most Bondi version of going out.

You may start while the beach is still bright and end after dark, which makes layers more important than formality.

For women:

Relaxed trousers + tank + oversized shirt + flat sandals.

For men:

Tailored shorts or trousers + tee or linen shirt + sneakers.

Take a knit, overshirt or light jacket if the evening is breezy.

Bondi’s waterfront bars and restaurants trade heavily on that late-afternoon-to-evening transition, so an outfit that works in both daylight and after dark makes far more sense than something overtly “nightclub”. Destination NSW specifically highlights sunset cocktails as part of the Bondi experience. See the official Bondi destination guide here.

What to wear to dinner in Bondi

This depends on the restaurant more than anything else.

For a casual pizza, pasta or neighbourhood dinner, elevated casual is enough.

For somewhere more polished, take the outfit one step further.

For women:

  • midi dress + sandals or low heels
  • tailored trousers + fitted top
  • silk-look skirt + knit or simple tank
  • dark denim + blouse + jewellery

For men:

  • relaxed trousers + collared shirt
  • dark jeans + knitted polo
  • chinos + short-sleeved shirt
  • clean minimal sneakers or loafers

Bondi does have genuinely high-end dining as well as very casual restaurants, so if you have booked somewhere specific, check that venue rather than assuming all Bondi restaurants have the same dress expectations. Destination NSW’s current Bondi guide includes both relaxed neighbourhood spots and fine-dining restaurants. You can check the current local dining mix here.

What to wear for a date night in Bondi

This is one of those occasions where trying slightly less usually works better.

You want to look as though you made an effort without appearing to have dressed for an entirely different suburb.

For women:

A simple dress, trousers with a fitted top, or dark denim with a good knit.

Add jewellery, a small bag and shoes you can comfortably walk in.

For men:

Dark trousers or jeans, good shirt or polo and clean shoes.

That is enough.

If there is any chance you will walk along the beachfront afterwards, footwear becomes part of the romantic planning.

What to wear to a Bondi pub

Keep it casual.

Denim, tees, shirts, tanks, relaxed dresses and sneakers all make sense.

For women:

  • jeans + fitted tee + jacket
  • mini dress + sneakers
  • trousers + tank

For men:

  • dark jeans + tee
  • shorts + shirt in warm weather
  • trousers + polo

Bondi also has venues where a casual drink can turn into a much later night. Destination NSW currently describes Beach Road Hotel, for example, as having a large dancefloor with regular Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night parties. See the current listing here.

If dancing is likely, choose shoes accordingly.

What to wear if you are actually going dancing

This is where a slightly more night-out outfit makes sense.

For women:

  • mini or midi dress + boots or comfortable heels
  • trousers + statement top
  • dark denim + fitted top + small bag
  • skirt + tank + light jacket

For men:

  • dark trousers or jeans
  • tee, polo or shirt
  • clean sneakers or casual leather shoes

Do not wear shoes that become unbearable after forty minutes.

There is nothing sophisticated about spending the rest of the night carrying them.

What to wear to Bondi Pavilion at night

This is a useful reminder that “going out in Bondi” does not always mean drinking.

Bondi Pavilion has an active 2026 program covering live performance, music, comedy, exhibitions, talks and community events. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}

For an evening performance or event there, smart casual is an easy default.

For women:

  • trousers + knit or blouse
  • simple dress + jacket
  • dark denim + polished top

For men:

  • trousers or dark jeans
  • shirt, polo or clean tee with an overshirt
  • clean sneakers or loafers

You do not need theatre formalwear simply because there is a stage involved.

Can you wear sneakers out in Bondi?

Yes.

In fact, they are often the most practical option.

Clean, simple sneakers work for:

  • casual dinners
  • bars
  • pubs
  • walking between venues
  • live music
  • dates

The important distinction is between intentional sneakers and the shoes you wore on a muddy run that morning.

If the rest of the outfit is polished, sneakers rarely make it feel underdone.

Do you need heels?

No.

Wear them if you like them.

But flats, sandals, loafers, boots and good sneakers can all work perfectly well in Bondi.

There is also a practical reason for this.

Bondi nights can involve more walking than expected: down Campbell Parade, along Hall Street, through the back streets, perhaps along the beachfront and then eventually to wherever you are trying to find a taxi.

Choose accordingly.

What to wear out in Bondi in summer

Summer nights favour lightweight fabrics.

For women:

  • linen trousers
  • cotton or linen dresses
  • skirts
  • tanks
  • flat sandals

For men:

  • tailored shorts
  • light trousers
  • linen or cotton shirts
  • tees
  • clean sneakers

Even in summer, a lightweight shirt or layer can be useful if you are right near the water late at night.

What to wear out in Bondi in winter

Winter evenings need proper layers.

Think:

  • dark denim
  • trousers
  • knits
  • boots or sneakers
  • casual jackets
  • lightweight coats

The key is retaining the same relaxed silhouette rather than suddenly dressing as though you are heading to a formal city restaurant.

A knit, good trousers and clean shoes can do most of the work.

What to wear in spring and autumn

These are the seasons where the outfit may need to survive two different temperatures.

Build from a lighter base:

  • tee or tank
  • shirt
  • dress
  • trousers
  • jeans

Then bring one layer:

  • knit
  • overshirt
  • denim jacket
  • light bomber
  • wind-resistant jacket

If you are visiting during the current season, our What to Wear in Bondi in Spring guide covers the temperature changes in more detail.

What not to wear out in Bondi

There are very few universal rules, but some choices make the evening unnecessarily difficult.

Wet swimwear
The beach day has ended. Change or at least dry off properly.

Beach thongs at a nicer dinner
A proper sandal, sneaker or loafer is an easy upgrade.

Overly formal clothes for a casual venue
You do not need cocktail attire for every booking.

Uncomfortable heels for a walking-heavy night
Bondi is not worth sacrificing your feet for.

An outfit built entirely around proving you are in Bondi
There is no compulsory linen uniform.

Beach to drinks without going home

This is the genuinely useful Bondi problem.

You are at the beach in the afternoon and drinks begin before you can reasonably justify going home.

For women:

One-piece swimsuit + relaxed trousers + oversized shirt + flat sandals.

Carry dry underwear, a small top if you want one, and perhaps some simple jewellery.

For men:

Swim shorts + clean shirt + sneakers or proper sandals.

If the shorts still look obviously wet, this plan has failed.

The secret is not a miraculous beach-to-bar garment.

It is drying off and putting on actual clothes.

One Bondi outfit that can handle the whole night

If you want one outfit that works for a drink, dinner and somewhere busier afterwards:

Women: relaxed black trousers, fitted tank, light oversized shirt or jacket, small bag and flat sandals or clean sneakers.

Men: dark trousers, good plain tee or polo, overshirt and clean sneakers.

Neither outfit is revolutionary.

That is why they work.

The Olivia rule for going out in Bondi

Dress one step above the beach, not five.

Bondi nightlife is varied. You can be having a quiet glass of wine, eating somewhere excellent, watching a performance at the Pavilion or dancing much later than you intended.

The safest wardrobe sits in the middle: clean, pared-back, slightly polished and comfortable enough to walk in.

If you are staying in Bondi for several days, our What to Wear in Bondi guide covers the whole day, while the Bondi packing list will help you work out how many of these outfits actually need to come with you.

And if someone announces at 10.30pm that you are all going somewhere else?

Finish the caviar and go.
