What to Pack for Bondi
Beach to coastal walk to dinner, in one small suitcase
Bondi is one of those places where it’s very easy to pack too much. You imagine beach days, long lunches, coastal walks and drinks at sunset, and suddenly half the wardrobe is on the bed. You don’t need it.
For a few days in Bondi, you need swimmers, one good beach layer, comfortable walking shoes, a handful of simple day pieces and one outfit polished enough for dinner.
The trick is packing clothes that move from beach to café rather than bringing a separate wardrobe for every part of the day. For the broader clothing guide, see What to Wear in Bondi.

The quick Bondi packing list
For a three- or four-day warm-weather visit, I’d pack:
- 2 swimsuits
- 2 T-shirts or tanks
- 1 oversized cotton or linen shirt
- 1 pair of relaxed shorts
- 1 pair of smarter shorts or lightweight trousers
- 1 simple dress or polished evening outfit
- 1 set of activewear
- 1 light knit, sweatshirt or wind layer
- clean sneakers and flat sandals or slides
- sunglasses and a cap or sun hat
- underwear and sleepwear
- a practical tote or beach bag
That covers the beach, the coastal walk, cafés, casual lunches and a nice dinner without feeling as though you wear the same thing every day.

What deserves space in your suitcase
Two swimsuits
One will technically do. Two is better: if you swim on consecutive days, a dry option helps, and it lets you choose one that works beneath normal clothes. A simple one-piece can double as a bodysuit under shorts, linen trousers or a skirt once you leave the beach. If bikinis are more your thing, choose whatever you’re comfortable swimming in.
An oversized shirt
Probably the hardest-working item you can pack. A crisp cotton or linen shirt is a beach cover-up, a sun layer, part of a brunch outfit, thrown over activewear, worn open over a tank, or an extra layer when the breeze comes up. White is easy, but pale blue, a soft stripe, navy, olive or natural linen all work. Choose one you’d happily wear away from the beach; that’s what gives it value. Men: a short-sleeved linen shirt does the same job.
One pair of proper walking shoes
Don’t come to Bondi with three pairs of sandals and nothing you want to walk in. Waverley Council notes that Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte are linked by a coastal walk that winds along the coastline, and plenty of visitors keep going towards Coogee. Source: Waverley Council
Clean sneakers are ideal: they cover the walk and still look normal when you stop for coffee or lunch. If you’re planning a proper run, bring your running shoes. Otherwise, one comfortable everyday pair is enough.
One light layer
Even in warm weather, Bondi gets breezy once the sun drops or the wind comes off the water. Pack one of a lightweight knit, a sweatshirt, a denim jacket, a thin bomber or a light wind-resistant jacket. You don’t need all five; pick the one that works with most of your other clothes.
What to pack for the beach
A Bondi beach bag needn’t be complicated: swimsuit, shirt or cover-up, a sand-free towel, hat or cap, sunglasses, sunscreen, water bottle, sandals or slides, and a dry layer for afterwards.
If you’ll go to cafés, shops or restaurants after swimming, pack clothes that make that transition easy. A loose shirt and shorts work far better than an elaborate resort cover-up that only makes sense while your feet are still in the sand.
Bondi is open, bright and exposed. A hat, sunglasses, sunscreen and a shirt with enough coverage are practical necessities, not styling extras. The hat that photographs beautifully but blows off in the first gust hasn’t earned its suitcase space.
What to pack for the coastal walk
Keep this simple: comfortable sneakers, shorts, bike shorts, leggings or other easy walking bottoms, a breathable tee or tank, a cap, sunglasses, water, and a light layer if the weather looks changeable.
Activewear makes complete sense here. What I wouldn’t do is pack several matching exercise outfits just because Bondi has a sporty reputation. One or two useful pieces are enough unless exercise is a big part of your trip.
What to pack for cafés and brunch
Bondi café dressing is casual, but a little polish helps. Build most daytime outfits from the same few pieces:
For women
Relaxed shorts, a tank and the oversized shirt; linen trousers with a swimsuit or fitted top; a simple cotton dress with sneakers; or denim with a plain tee.
For men
Tailored or relaxed shorts with a T-shirt; a linen shirt and shorts; light trousers with a tee; or a knitted polo with simple sneakers.
The point isn’t a designated “brunch outfit”. It’s pieces that combine easily.
What to pack for dinner in Bondi
You generally don’t need formal eveningwear. One polished outfit is enough for most visitors.
For women: a simple midi dress, black or cream trousers with a fitted top, a skirt and clean tank, or dark denim with a neat top and jewellery. For men: relaxed trousers with a shirt, dark jeans and a good tee with an overshirt, tailored shorts with a linen shirt on a warm evening, or chinos and a knitted polo.
There’s little need for formal shoes unless you know you’re going somewhere that calls for them. Clean sneakers or a good flat sandal take you surprisingly far. For more, see our Bondi dinner guide and, for later nights, Bondi nightlife.
How many shoes should you pack?
Two pairs cover most Bondi trips:
Pair one: clean sneakers
For walking, cafés, exploring and travel days.
Pair two: flat sandals or slides
For the beach and warm casual days.
If you have a particular restaurant, function or event planned, add one smarter pair. Otherwise, stop there. Shoes consume luggage space very efficiently and provide very little entertainment while doing so.
Pack by season
Summer
Breathable clothing: swimwear, shorts, linen or cotton shirts, tees and tanks, light dresses, sandals, sneakers, a sun hat and one light evening layer. Heavy jeans and bulky jackets won’t be the stars of your trip. See Bondi in summer.
Autumn
Early autumn can still feel very summery; later you’ll want trousers and an extra layer: jeans or relaxed trousers, a light knit, an overshirt and a light jacket. Keep some warmer-weather clothes in the bag too.
Winter
The season people most underpack for: a sunny Bondi photo can still be a winter photo. Pack jeans or trousers, tees for layering, a knit or sweatshirt, a proper jacket, closed sneakers and one lighter layer for warmer afternoons. See Sydney in winter.
Spring
Spring rewards layers. Pack much of your summer wardrobe, then add a light knit, an overshirt, a denim jacket or light wind layer, jeans or trousers and comfortable sneakers. A warm afternoon can feel summery while the waterfront stays cooler. See Bondi in spring.
A five-piece Bondi capsule wardrobe
If you’re travelling very light, start here:
- Oversized shirt
- Relaxed shorts or trousers
- Plain tank or T-shirt
- Simple dress or polished second bottom
- Clean sneakers
Add swimwear, underwear, sandals and a light layer. That’s enough combinations for several days without a different outfit for every photo. Our capsule wardrobe guide goes further.
What you probably don’t need
- Several “beach outfits”. It’s the same beach. Swimwear plus a useful shirt or cover-up is enough.
- Multiple pairs of dress shoes. Unless your itinerary says otherwise, Bondi isn’t demanding them.
- A giant resort hat. Bring it if you love wearing it; otherwise a practical hat or cap gets far more use.
- Half your activewear drawer. You may walk a lot. That doesn’t mean every outfit should suggest you’re six minutes from a reformer class.
- A separate evening wardrobe. Pack one or two pieces that lift what you already brought.
If you’re travelling carry-on only
Bondi is exceptionally easy to do with hand luggage. Wear your bulkiest shoes on the flight, and use packing cubes to keep things organised.
Pack around one simple palette so almost everything works together. White, navy, black, denim, stone, olive and pale blue are easy choices, but there’s no need to remove colour from your personality; add one or two stronger pieces for interest.
The goal isn’t a minimalist aesthetic. It’s a suitcase where almost everything can be worn with almost everything else. See our carry-on-only guide.
The bag to take around Bondi
A medium tote is the most useful option. It should fit water, sunscreen, sunglasses, a shirt or light layer, swimwear or dry underwear, and a small towel. A crossbody bag suits evenings or shorter outings, but a tiny bag becomes slightly ridiculous if the day includes the beach.

A note on beach safety
If swimming is part of your trip, the most important preparation has nothing to do with clothes.
Waverley Council advises swimmers to stay between the red and yellow flags. Bondi’s lifeguards patrol every month of the year: 6am to 7pm from October to April, and 7am to 5:30pm from May to September. Check Waverley Council’s current beach safety advice before swimming.

If a piece can only be worn for one hour of one day, it has to earn its suitcase space.
Bondi isn’t difficult to dress for. The beach is casual. The coastal walk needs sensible shoes. Cafés want little more than clean, intentional clothes. Dinner usually needs one step up from whatever you wore in the afternoon.
Pack pieces that move between those settings and you’ll need far less than you think: two swimsuits, one excellent shirt, useful shorts or trousers, good sneakers, sandals, a light layer and one polished outfit. The remaining suitcase space can go to something truly important. Caviar, presumably.
