What to Wear to Dinner in Brisbane

Dress up through polish, not through weight.

For dinner in Brisbane, smart casual is the safest default: lightweight trousers, a skirt or a midi dress with a polished shirt or top and loafers, flats, smart sandals or clean sneakers.

The Brisbane part matters. For much of the year, dinner begins while it’s still warm or humid outside, so you’re better off dressing up through fabric, fit and shoes rather than adding heavy jackets and layers.

If you’re visiting rather than local, start with our what to wear in Brisbane guide for the broader climate picture.

The safest Brisbane dinner outfit

Trousers

Lightweight tailored trousers + collared linen shirt or polished top + loafers or flats.

Relaxed venue

Tailored shorts + linen shirt or polo + loafers, sandals or clean sneakers.

For fine dining, move towards tailoring and dressier footwear. If you’re unsure, aim one step above everyday casual rather than one step below it.

How dressed up should you be?

There is no single Brisbane restaurant dress code. The useful range is:

RestaurantWhat to wear
Casual (pub, brewery, neighbourhood Italian)Neat shorts or jeans + good T-shirt, polo, shirt or simple top + clean sneakers or sandals
Smart casualLightweight trousers or skirt + collared shirt, blouse or polished top + loafers, flats or refined sandals
UpscaleTailored trousers, dress, skirt or lightweight suit + polished shirt or top + smarter shoes
Fine dining or celebrationRefined tailoring or a dressier outfit, still in fabrics that suit Brisbane’s climate

Our smart casual guide explains that middle range in more detail, and our general restaurant guide covers dinners anywhere.

Casual, smart casual or fine dining

Casual restaurant

For a neighbourhood restaurant, pub meal, brewery or relaxed riverside dinner: chinos or dark jeans + T-shirt, polo or open-collar shirt + clean sneakers or loafers, or midi skirt + simple top + sneakers or flats. The distinction is between casual and untidy. Clean, intentional clothes go a long way.

Smart-casual restaurant

Probably the most useful category for Brisbane dining. Try lightweight tailored trousers + collared shirt + loafers, wide-leg trousers + polished linen top + flats, or midi dress + smart sandals. A lightweight blazer sharpens the outfit in winter or indoors, but it’s rarely essential. Some venues spell out what smart casual excludes: Luc Lac at Queen’s Wharf, for example, lists no thongs, no singlets and no shorts for men after 5pm.

Fine dining

Move towards a more polished version of the same Brisbane logic rather than dressing for a colder city: tailored trousers + crisp shirt or refined top + loafers, dress shoes, flats or heels. A midi or longer dress, elegant separates or a lightweight suit also work. You generally don’t need a tie, and a heavy wool suit is rarely necessary just because the restaurant is expensive. In warm weather, a lightweight suit or tailored trousers with an open-collar shirt makes far more sense.

If the restaurant publishes a dress code, follow it. Venue rules always outrank general Brisbane advice.

What to wear to dinner by Brisbane neighbourhood

Brisbane CBD

From after-work casual to serious fine dining. Straight from the office, lightweight trousers + shirt or blouse + loafers or flats works for many restaurants. For somewhere more polished, add a light blazer or smarter shoes. If you have no idea what the restaurant is like, dress slightly smarter here.

Howard Smith Wharves

Relaxed riverfront dinner: tailored shorts or lightweight trousers + linen shirt or good T-shirt + clean sneakers or loafers. Smarter booking: tailored trousers + polished shirt or top + loafers, flats or sandals, or a midi dress. Evenings by the river feel cooler after sunset in winter and early spring, so bring a light layer. “River breeze” doesn’t mean a heavy coat. Brisbane is still Brisbane.

James Street and Fortitude Valley

Polished smart casual is a safe start: lightweight trousers + short-sleeve or linen shirt + loafers, wide-leg trousers + polished top + sandals, or midi dress + simple jewellery + flats or heels. Clean sneakers work in many restaurants, but loafers, flats or sandals are easier if you’re unsure.

New Farm and Teneriffe

Relaxed polish: chinos or lightweight trousers + linen or cotton shirt + loafers, midi skirt + simple top + sandals, or relaxed dress + clean sneakers or flats. If dinner turns into drinks, make the shoes and outer layer slightly smarter.

South Bank

More walking than a simple booking suggests, especially if you’re seeing a show or strolling the river first. Try light trousers + polished top + loafers or flats, midi dress + comfortable sandals, or chinos + collared shirt + clean sneakers. Shoes that look great at the table but hurt on the walk back across South Bank aren’t worth it.

Queen’s Wharf

Casual and polished dining side by side. If you don’t know the restaurant, treat smart casual as the minimum. For signature restaurants or special occasions, step up to lightweight tailoring, a smarter dress or refined separates. Entertainment or premium areas can have stricter entry standards than the restaurant, so check before you go.

Dinner dates and business dinners

Date night: a slightly more considered version of what you’d otherwise wear to that restaurant. Try tailored trousers + open-collar shirt + loafers, midi dress + refined sandals, or wide-leg trousers + polished top + flats. The restaurant sets the formality; the date just gives you a reason to choose the better version. See our first date guide too.

Business dinner: lightweight professional clothing. Tailored trousers + collared shirt or blouse + blazer + loafers or flats, or a midi dress with a light jacket. The blazer can come off if the evening is warm. More in our business casual guide.

Quick answers

Can you wear shorts?

Yes, in the right restaurant. Tailored or presentable shorts with a linen shirt or polo work for casual dinners. For upscale venues, trousers are safer unless you know they’re relaxed about shorts.

Can you wear jeans?

Usually. Dark, clean jeans with a good shirt, blouse or jacket work at many casual and smart-casual restaurants. For serious fine dining, choose tailored trousers.

Can you wear sneakers?

Often. Clean, understated sneakers work in many restaurants. The risk rises as the venue gets more formal, so choose loafers, flats or sandals if you can’t check.

Can you wear thongs?

At a very casual venue, possibly. At a smarter restaurant, don’t rely on them: some Brisbane venues list thongs as excluded under smart casual.

Do you need a jacket?

Summer: no. Winter: a light jacket, cardigan or blazer, especially for riverside or outdoor tables. A heavy coat is still unnecessary most nights.

The safest thing to wear to dinner in Brisbane

If you know nothing about the restaurant, wear lightweight tailored trousers or a midi dress + polished shirt or top + loafers, flats or smart sandals, such as slingbacks. That puts you comfortably inside Brisbane smart casual without looking overdressed at an ordinary restaurant.

For a casual venue, relax the trousers or shoes. For fine dining, improve the tailoring and footwear. In summer, keep everything light; in winter, carry one useful layer.

If you remember one thing: dress up for Brisbane dinner through polish, not through weight.
