What to Wear in Byron Bay
Relaxed without looking themed: beach, town, dinner, the lighthouse walk and the hinterland, season by season.
What should you wear in Byron Bay? The easiest way to dress for Byron is to look relaxed without looking themed. Think worn-in denim, loose cotton or linen shirts, tanks and tees, simple dresses, comfortable sandals or sneakers, and one light layer for evenings. You don’t need a wide-brimmed hat, crochet trousers and an armful of beads to prove you know where you are.
Byron is a beach town, but it’s also a restaurant town, a walking town, a surf town and a jumping-off point for the hinterland. What works at Main Beach at 2 pm isn’t necessarily what you want for dinner that night. The useful version of “Byron style” is easy, individual and slightly undone: fit, fabric, footwear and a little personality matter more than a recognisable Byron costume.

The safe choice for Byron Bay
If you want one outfit formula that covers most of a Byron holiday, use this:
| Piece | What to choose |
|---|---|
| Top | Tank, good-quality T-shirt or loose linen shirt |
| Bottom | Denim shorts, relaxed trousers, linen shorts or an easy skirt |
| Dress option | An unfussy cotton or linen dress that works with flat shoes |
| Shoes | Comfortable sandals, thongs for genuinely beachy days, or worn-in sneakers |
| Extra layer | Overshirt, light knit or casual jacket |
| Accessories | Sunglasses, a practical sun hat and one or two pieces that feel like you |
That combination works because Byron rewards clothes that move between settings without much fuss.

Byron Bay style is less “boho” than you may expect
Byron’s counterculture identity still exists, but it now sits beside surf culture, independent fashion, resort wear, good restaurants, boutique hotels and visitors from all over Australia. You’ll certainly see linen, flowing dresses, vintage pieces and earthy colours. You’ll also see old jeans, plain singlets, surfwear, running gear, oversized shirts and very simple outfits.
The common thread is ease, not a particular aesthetic. If you already like vintage, natural fabrics or interesting accessories, bring them. If you normally wear a plain white tee and jeans, you don’t need to reinvent yourself the moment you cross into Byron Shire.

What to wear around Byron Bay town
For walking around Jonson, Fletcher and Lawson Streets and the surrounding lanes, casual clothes are completely normal. Easy daytime outfits:
- cotton tank + relaxed trousers + sandals
- T-shirt + denim shorts + sneakers
- simple midi dress + flat sandals
- linen shirt worn open over a tank + shorts
- lightweight shirt + chinos or casual shorts
Prioritise footwear. You may walk much more than expected: accommodation to breakfast, breakfast to shops, shops to beach, beach back into town, and possibly up towards Cape Byron if enthusiasm gets the better of you. Save uncomfortable new sandals for somewhere else.
What to wear to the beach
For Main Beach, Clarkes, Wategos and Belongil, keep it simple: swimmers with something easy to throw over them (an oversized shirt, shorts, a cotton dress or a sarong you’ll actually use), plus a straw tote, sunglasses, hat and thongs. Main Beach is right beside town, so a proper cover-up makes the move from sand to food easy. More in our Byron Bay beach guide.
What to wear for the Cape Byron walk
Comfort beats looks here. The Walgun Cape Byron walking track is a 3.7 km loop through beach, rainforest, grassland and clifftop. Wear shorts, leggings or light trousers, a tee or breathable top, proper sneakers, a hat and sunglasses, plus a light layer if heading out early. No hiking boots needed, but flimsy fashion sandals are a poor trade.
What to wear to dinner in Byron Bay
Byron evenings are where visitors misjudge the town in both directions. You don’t normally need city-style formal dressing, but “beach town” doesn’t mean every restaurant feels like a fish-and-chip shop. Aim for relaxed but deliberate.
Women: a simple dress with flat or low sandals, linen trousers with a fitted top, or a skirt with a good tank and small jewellery.
Men: an open-collar linen or cotton shirt, clean T-shirt or polo with casual trousers or good shorts. Clean sneakers, loafers or simple leather sandals, depending on the venue.
Somewhere more polished? Upgrade fabric and shoes before formality: a beautifully cut lightweight shirt looks more at home here than a stiff jacket. If a restaurant or event specifies a dress code, follow it; our dress code guide and smart casual guide explain the terms.

What to wear in the Byron hinterland
Once you head towards Bangalow and the surrounding countryside, you’re no longer dressing for a beach day. Expect gravel, grass, uneven ground, cooler mornings and evenings, cafes, long lunches and drives between towns.
- relaxed jeans or trousers
- cotton shirts
- simple dresses with practical shoes
- sneakers, boots or sturdy flat sandals
- a light jacket or knit outside summer
For a hinterland wedding, long lunch or special event, dress for the venue: grass and uneven surfaces matter more than whether your outfit feels sufficiently “Byron”. Our beach wedding guide helps for coastal ceremonies.
Byron Bay weather: what it means for your clothes
Byron has a warm coastal climate, but it isn’t permanently hot. Bureau of Meteorology climate averages from the Cape Byron weather station show average maximums of about 28°C in January and 19°C in July, with average minimums falling from about 21°C to 12°C. Summer and early autumn are the wettest months, though coastal weather doesn’t always respect your itinerary.
So build a Byron wardrobe around light clothes plus one extra layer, not an entirely tropical or entirely cool-weather suitcase.
| Season | Typical max | What to pack |
|---|---|---|
| Summer (Dec–Feb) | 27–28°C, humid | Cotton and linen shirts, tanks, shorts, loose dresses, swimmers and sandals. A very light rain layer beats a heavy jacket. |
| Autumn (Mar–May) | 21–27°C | Early autumn still feels like summer; by May, add jeans, relaxed trousers, a long-sleeved shirt and a light knit or jacket. |
| Winter (Jun–Aug) | 19–20°C | Lovely days, cool mornings and evenings. Jeans, trousers, sneakers, knits and a casual jacket, but not Melbourne-in-July packing. |
| Spring (Sep–Nov) | 22–25°C | Light-layer territory: beach clothes return, evenings still justify an overshirt. See Byron Bay in spring. |
The fabrics that work best
You don’t have to wear linen in Byron, but it helps. Cotton, linen, lightweight denim and breathable blends suit the climate. Avoid outfits made entirely from heavy synthetics. Texture makes simple outfits interesting: washed cotton, faded denim, ribbed tanks, woven bags and well-worn leather.
Do you need heels?
Probably not. Bring them for a specific dinner, wedding or event, but flat sandals, good sneakers, loafers and low comfortable shoes cover far more ground. For a hinterland event in heels, check whether you’ll be standing on grass.
What colours work?
There’s no compulsory Byron palette. White, cream, faded blue, olive, tan, brown and washed black are easy, but a faded red shirt, patterned dress or old band tee can look more convincing than head-to-toe beige. The best outfits look collected, not bought as a holiday uniform.
What not to wear in Byron Bay
The main mistakes are practical rather than fashionable.
- Don’t pack only beach clothes. You may want something more considered for dinner.
- Don’t pack only sandals. Bring proper walking shoes.
- Don’t assume winter is hot. Sunshine and a cool evening can share a day.
- Don’t build a Byron costume. You’re allowed to dress like yourself.
- Don’t underestimate rain. A compact rain layer can save a day.
- Don’t sacrifice comfort for a photo. Especially if you’re walking to the lighthouse.

Three easy Byron Bay outfits
Beach and town
Tank + denim shorts + loose cotton shirt + sandals. Wear the shirt open in the heat, button it for sun coverage, and add swimmers underneath if the beach is on the plan.
Coffee, shops and a long lunch
Relaxed trousers + simple tee or fitted tank + sneakers + small accessory. Comfortable for walking around town; intentional without feeling dressed up.
Dinner
Simple dress + flat leather sandals, or lightweight collared shirt + casual trousers + clean sneakers or loafers. No costume, just slightly sharper clothes.
Trying very hard to look relaxed tends to produce the opposite result.
The Byron rule worth remembering
Bring clothes you already like. Choose pieces that breathe, walk well and can handle the beach. Add enough layers for the season, and keep one better outfit for dinner. A faded shirt, repeated jeans or clearly worn sneakers aren’t a failure of holiday dressing here. They may be closer to the point.
Frequently asked questions
Is Byron Bay very casual?
Yes, generally. Beachwear and very relaxed clothes are normal during the day. Restaurants, weddings and more polished venues can warrant smarter clothing, so dress for the setting rather than assuming one town-wide dress code.
What should I wear in Byron Bay at night?
Relaxed smart-casual rather than formal: a simple dress, trousers and a good top, or a lightweight collared shirt with casual trousers. Bring a layer outside summer.
Can I wear thongs around Byron Bay?
Absolutely for the beach and casual daytime. For long walks, smarter restaurants or the hinterland, bring another pair of shoes.
Do people wear black in Byron Bay?
Of course. You don’t have to abandon your wardrobe for white linen. Washed black jeans, tanks, dresses and shirts fit easily into the local mix.
Do I need a jacket in Byron Bay?
In winter, yes, a light-to-medium casual jacket. In autumn and spring, an overshirt, knit or light jacket. In summer, something very light for rain, air-conditioning or a breezy evening.
Is Byron Bay still bohemian?
That’s part of its history and one strand of the town, but not the whole story. Byron today mixes surf culture, creative locals, holidaymakers, restaurants, boutiques, resorts and the hinterland. Dressing for what you’re actually doing looks more at home than reproducing a stereotype.
