What to Wear to a Wedding as a Man
Invitation first, venue second, weather third.
If you are unsure what a man should wear to a wedding, start with the invitation. Read the dress code first, then adjust for the venue, time of day, season and weather.
For many Australian weddings, a well-fitting navy or mid-grey suit, crisp shirt and polished shoes will get you most of the way there. But a beach ceremony, garden cocktail wedding and black-tie hotel reception should not all produce the same outfit.
The aim is simple: look polished and celebratory without looking like you have come straight from the office or are trying to join the wedding party.
If you want the broader starting point before getting into menswear, see our complete wedding guest guide. Dressing alongside a partner? Our women’s wedding guest guide covers the other half of the outfit planning.

The quick answer
If the invitation gives no useful dress code, one of the safest combinations is:
Navy or mid-grey suit + white or pale-blue shirt + polished leather shoes.
Take a tie if you are uncertain. You can always remove it later if the event turns out to be more relaxed.
Less formal wedding: tailored trousers + collared shirt + unstructured jacket + loafers.
Relaxed warm-weather wedding: tailored trousers + open-collar linen shirt + polished loafers or other smart shoes.
The outfit should look deliberate rather than accidental.

Start with the invitation
The invitation should make the first decision for you. Look for wording such as casual, smart casual, cocktail, formal, black tie, garden cocktail or beach formal.
If the terminology is unclear, our dress-code guides explain the main levels of formality in more detail. (If you are the one getting married, see how to set a wedding dress code.)
Then look at the actual wedding. A cocktail wedding in a city restaurant might call for a sharp suit. A garden wedding can require the same degree of polish but benefit from shoes that cope with grass. A beach wedding may call for lighter construction. A formal evening reception generally supports darker, more traditional tailoring.
If you are deciding between two equally plausible outfits, being slightly more polished is usually easier to manage than arriving substantially too casual.
Wedding dress codes for men
| Dress code | Safe guest-ready choice |
|---|---|
| Casual | Tailored trousers or chinos + collared shirt + loafers or smart leather shoes |
| Smart casual | Tailored trousers + collared shirt + optional unstructured jacket |
| Cocktail | Suit + collared shirt + polished leather shoes; tie depending on the wedding |
| Formal | Dark or polished suit + dress shirt + tie + dress shoes |
| Black tie | Tuxedo or dinner suit + formal shirt + black bow tie + black dress shoes |
These are useful starting points, not universal laws. The couple’s wording and the particular event still matter.
Casual and smart-casual weddings
Casual
Casual does not usually mean shorts, thongs and whatever polo is clean. Start with tailored chinos or trousers, a collared shirt and loafers or polished leather shoes. In warm weather a linen or linen-blend shirt works well. A jacket may not be necessary, although an unstructured blazer gives you an easy way to dress up on arrival. See what to wear to a casual wedding and our casual dress-code guide.
Smart casual
At a wedding, smart casual should sit slightly above your everyday smart casual. Try tailored trousers + collared shirt + loafers; chinos + dress shirt + unstructured blazer; a lightweight suit without a tie; or tailored separates in complementary colours. Clean minimal sneakers can work at some contemporary weddings, but loafers or smart leather shoes are easier if you are unsure. See what smart casual means.
What should men wear to a cocktail wedding?
Cocktail is one of the most common wedding dress codes and one of the easiest to overcomplicate. A dependable outfit is:
Navy suit + white or pale-blue shirt + polished leather shoes.
Choose a crisp dress shirt. A tie can sharpen the outfit for a church, city or evening wedding. At a more relaxed contemporary reception, an open collar may work if everything else is polished.
If you want more personality, add it through texture and colour rather than reinventing the whole outfit. A deep-green, tobacco, blue or subtly checked jacket can work when it suits the venue.
The goal is celebratory rather than corporate. Our cocktail dress-code guide goes deeper into where cocktail sits on the formality scale.

What should men wear to a formal or black-tie wedding?
Formal usually means a proper suit, dress shirt, tie and polished shoes: dark navy or charcoal suit + white shirt + tie + black or dark-brown dress shoes. If the wedding is outdoors or in warm weather, use lighter-weight wool or less heavily constructed tailoring rather than simply removing the formality. See what to wear to a formal wedding and our formal dress-code guide.
Black tie gives you less room for interpretation: black or midnight-blue tuxedo + formal white shirt + black bow tie + polished black dress shoes. If the invitation says black tie optional, a dark formal suit may also be appropriate. A standard business suit is not the first choice when the invitation simply says black tie.
See our complete black-tie wedding guest guide. If an invitation ever goes one step further to white tie, our white-tie guide explains what changes.
Daytime and evening weddings
Daytime
Daytime weddings often accommodate lighter colours and softer tailoring, but the stated dress code still wins. Good options: a mid-grey or blue suit, a lightweight navy suit, stone or beige tailoring where appropriate, or tailored trousers with a shirt and jacket. A tie can be added or removed according to the dress code. If the ceremony is outdoors, consider heat, shade and how long you will be standing. See what to wear to a daytime wedding.
Evening
Evening weddings support darker colours and more polished tailoring. A plain choice is a navy or charcoal suit + crisp shirt + polished leather shoes. Add a tie for formal events; for cocktail, an open collar can work. If the reception continues outdoors after sunset, a proper overcoat will look far better than an everyday hoodie over a good suit. See our evening wedding guide.
What should men wear to a beach wedding?
Beach weddings are where fabric, construction and footwear begin to matter as much as colour. Depending on the dress code, useful combinations include:
- a lightweight suit in navy, stone, beige or blue
- tailored trousers + linen or cotton-blend shirt
- unstructured jacket + tailored trousers
- loafers or lightweight leather shoes
- polished sandals only where the invitation clearly supports them
If the invitation says beach formal, remember that formal is still doing important work. It means adapting formal dressing for the coast rather than turning up in beachwear.

What should men wear to a garden wedding?
A garden wedding can be every bit as polished as a city wedding. The main difference may simply be what is underneath your shoes. A strong option is a suit or tailored trousers + collared shirt + loafers or polished shoes with a practical sole.
Consider grass, gravel, uneven paths, sun exposure, wind and the temperature after sunset. For a daytime event, lighter colours and softer tailoring can look particularly natural.
See our full guide to what to wear to a garden wedding.
What should men wear to a winery wedding?
Winery weddings combine wedding formality with rural terrain and often significant temperature changes. For cocktail or formal, a suit remains the easy answer. For a more relaxed event, tailored trousers and a blazer may work.
Think carefully about grass and gravel, walking between ceremony and reception areas, afternoon sun and cooler temperatures after sunset.
Our winery wedding guide covers country cocktail, regional weather and practical footwear in more detail.

Church or religious weddings
Religious weddings can have particular dress expectations, and those expectations vary between communities and places of worship. Follow any guidance provided by the couple or venue rather than relying on general assumptions.
If no additional requirement is given, a suit or tailored trousers with a collared shirt is a sensible starting point. Where a jacket, tie, head covering or other item is expected, follow the specific guidance given for that ceremony.
Chinos, polos, shorts, sneakers and ties: can you wear them?
Chinos: yes, when the code allows
Chinos work best for casual and smart-casual weddings. Try tailored chinos + collared shirt + loafers + optional blazer. For formal weddings, move to a proper suit. Cocktail usually calls for sharper tailoring too.
Polo shirts: sometimes
A refined knit polo can work at a casual or resort-style wedding, particularly in hot weather. Our resort-casual guide shows where that line sits. For most weddings, a button-up shirt is easier to get right.
Shorts: only if clearly supported
Tailored shorts can occasionally work at a very relaxed tropical or beach wedding. For smart casual, cocktail, formal or black tie, trousers are the safer choice. If you are uncertain, wear trousers.
Sneakers: sometimes
Clean minimal sneakers can work at casual and some modern smart-casual weddings. Once the dress code reaches cocktail or formal, loafers, Derbies, Oxfords or other polished leather shoes are much easier to justify.
A tie: not always
Black tie: wear the specified bow tie. Formal: a tie is normally the safe choice. Cocktail: it depends on venue, time and styling. Smart casual or casual: usually optional. If you are uncertain, take one. Removing a tie is far easier than inventing one after you arrive.
What colour suit should men wear to a wedding?
Navy is the most useful all-rounder. It works across daytime, evening, cocktail and many formal weddings and is easy to wear again. Other useful colours include mid-grey, charcoal, blue, stone and beige for warm-weather daytime weddings, and dark green or brown when the venue and dress code suit them.
Black works particularly well for evening and formal events, but navy and charcoal are usually more versatile for a guest wardrobe.
For help matching shirts and ties to your suit, see colours that go together.
Should you match the wedding colours? No, unless the couple has asked guests to. A tie or pocket square that happens to complement the event is fine, but you do not need to turn yourself into part of the styling.

What shoes should men wear to a wedding?
Choose them according to both the dress code and the ground.
Black tie and formal
Black tie: polished black formal shoes. Formal: polished Oxfords, Derbies or similarly refined leather shoes.
Cocktail and smart casual
Cocktail: polished leather shoes or loafers. Smart casual: loafers, leather shoes or clean minimal sneakers where appropriate.
Garden, winery and beach
Garden or winery: polished shoes with a sole you can comfortably walk in. Beach: loafers or lightweight leather footwear, with sandals only where the dress code clearly permits them.
For a broader look at choosing shoes for different surfaces and occasions, see our shoe guide.
Summer, spring and cold-weather weddings
Summer
Hot weather should change the fabric and construction of your outfit before it changes the level of formality. Look for lightweight wool, linen blends, cotton-linen shirts, unstructured jackets, lighter suit colours for daytime and lighter linings. A lightweight suit can still look formal. See what to wear to a summer wedding and our hot-weather clothing guide.
Spring
Spring gives you room for lighter colour, softer tailoring and more texture, but Australian spring weather can change quickly. A lightweight navy, blue or grey suit works across a huge range of weddings. If the event runs into the evening, take the temperature change seriously. If rain is possible, see our guide to dressing for rain and our spring wedding guide.

What should men wear to a cold-weather wedding?
Cooler weather makes traditional tailoring relatively easy. A useful combination is a wool suit + long-sleeved shirt + tie where required + leather shoes + tailored overcoat.
Do not assemble a polished wedding outfit and then ruin the effect by relying on the only casual jacket in your wardrobe.
If the ceremony is outdoors, plan for the temperature you will actually be standing in. Our layering guide shows how to add warmth without losing the shape of the suit.
Suit fit and building a wedding wardrobe
How a wedding suit should fit
Check that the shoulder sits cleanly rather than collapsing or pulling, the jacket closes without obvious strain, the shirt collar sits neatly, the trousers do not pool heavily over the shoes, and you can sit, walk and dance comfortably. A modestly priced suit that fits properly will usually look better than expensive tailoring in the wrong proportions.
Do you need a new suit every time?
No. A useful wedding wardrobe: one navy suit, one white shirt, one pale-blue or subtly patterned shirt, brown polished shoes or loafers, black dress shoes if you attend formal events, a few ties and one unstructured jacket for relaxed weddings. Change the shirt, tie, shoes and accessories and the same suit attends a surprising number of weddings. It will also carry you through a day at the races; see what men wear to the races.
What not to wear to a wedding
Most wedding mistakes come from ignoring the event rather than breaking some obscure etiquette rule.
- Do not ignore the invitation. Formal means formal; casual gives you room to relax.
- Do not assume outdoor means casual. Garden, winery and beach describe the setting, not necessarily the dress code.
- Do not default to office styling. A suit can be perfect, but make it feel celebratory rather than corporate.
- Do not wear shorts unless the wedding clearly supports them.
- Do not wear worn-out casual shoes.
- Do not assume expensive means appropriate. Fit and context matter more.
- Do not let generic etiquette lists override what the couple has actually requested.
A simple wedding outfit checklist for men
Before leaving home, ask:
- Does this outfit match the stated dress code?
- Does it make sense at the venue?
- Does it work for the ceremony and reception?
- Can I comfortably stand, sit, walk and dance in it?
- Are my shoes appropriate for the ground?
- Will I need another layer after sunset?
- Are there cultural or religious requirements I need to follow?
- Can I wear most of these clothes again?
The easiest rule for deciding what men should wear to a wedding
Invitation first. Venue second. Weather third.
Then choose the simplest version of the outfit that still looks deliberately dressed for the occasion.
For a lot of men, that will be a navy suit, crisp shirt and good shoes. For a relaxed wedding, it may be tailored trousers and an open-collar shirt. For black tie, it is a tuxedo.
You do not need to turn wedding dressing into an exam. The goal is to arrive looking appropriate, comfortable and ready to celebrate.
