What to Wear in Bondi in Summer

Beach, brunch, the coastal walk and dinner, without starting again each time

Bondi in summer is easy to dress for if you build the outfit around heat, sun and what happens after the beach.

For most summer days, think swimwear, breathable shirts, shorts, relaxed trousers, simple dresses, flat sandals and clean sneakers. Add proper sun protection and perhaps one very light layer if you will still be near the water after dark.

The aim is not a special “Bondi wardrobe”. It is clothes that move from the beach to Campbell Parade, lunch, the coastal walk and dinner without starting again each time.

The quick answer

Women: a swimsuit or fitted tank, relaxed linen or cotton trousers or shorts, an oversized linen shirt, flat sandals and sunglasses.

Men: tailored or swim shorts, a plain T-shirt or lightweight shirt, clean sneakers or sandals and a cap.

The rule: coastal walk planned? Wear sneakers. Going somewhere nicer at night? Swap the beach pieces for one slightly more polished layer, not a whole separate outfit.

What is Bondi weather like in summer?

Summer in coastal Sydney is warm rather than permanently scorching, but hot days absolutely happen.

Source: Bureau of Meteorology, Sydney Airport (1939 to 2026), a useful guide for coastal Sydney. Those averages include mild days as well as hot spells, and a particular afternoon can be much warmer. The Bureau’s spring 2026 outlook pointed to above-average temperatures across most of Australia, so check its latest long-range forecast for summer too. Do not use a seasonal average as your morning forecast.

What to wear to Bondi Beach in summer

Keep the beach outfit uncomplicated.

Women: a swimsuit or bikini, an oversized cotton or linen shirt, relaxed linen shorts or lightweight trousers, flat sandals or slides, a hat and sunglasses.

Men: swim shorts, a plain T-shirt or lightweight shirt, sandals, slides or sneakers, a cap or sun hat and sunglasses.

A shirt is more useful than a beach cover-up that only works on the sand. Choose something you would happily wear into a café afterwards. For more, see our Bondi Beach guide.

The one-piece swimsuit earns its keep

If you like one-piece swimwear, Bondi is a very good place to use its versatility. Wear it under linen trousers, denim shorts, a relaxed skirt or an oversized shirt. Once you are dry, it works much like a bodysuit and saves carrying an extra top.

That is exactly the sort of clothing that makes sense here: something that works on the beach and still has a job afterwards.

On a very hot day, simplify

When the temperature climbs, choose loose, breathable clothes rather than more styling: linen shorts, cotton poplin shirts, loose dresses, lightweight tanks and tees, relaxed breathable trousers and flat sandals. A long-sleeved lightweight shirt can be more useful than a tiny top if you are outside for hours, because it adds sun coverage without feeling heavy. Save thick denim, heavy knits and dense synthetics for another day.

Sun protection is part of the outfit

This is not the glamorous footnote. It is the practical bit.

Cancer Council Australia recommends sun protection when the UV Index reaches 3 or above: protective clothing, SPF50 or SPF50+ sunscreen, a broad-brimmed hat, shade and sunglasses. Summer UV can be intense even when a sea breeze makes the temperature feel comfortable.

For a long Bondi day, include a hat that stays on your head, good sunglasses, a shirt you can use for coverage, sunscreen and water. Do not confuse “I am not particularly hot” with “the sun is not strong”.

What to wear on the Bondi coastal walk in summer

Do the walk early if you can. You want running shorts, bike shorts or other light bottoms, a breathable tee or tank, proper sneakers, a cap, sunglasses, sun protection and water.

The Bondi to Coogee walk covers several kilometres with stairs and exposed coastal sections, so this is not the place for delicate sandals just because they match the beach. If brunch follows, carry an oversized shirt. Throw it over the activewear and you look like you have moved on with your day.

Can you just wear activewear all day?

You can. The more useful question is whether you want to. Activewear makes complete sense for running, walking, training and grabbing coffee afterwards. For lunch, shopping, afternoon drinks or dinner, one small change helps a lot: swap the sports top for a cotton shirt, add relaxed trousers over swimwear, or change from running shoes into clean everyday sneakers or sandals.

Bondi is sporty. It is not a compulsory uniform.

What to wear to brunch in Bondi in summer

Summer brunch is where Bondi’s pared-back style works best.

Women: linen trousers with a fitted tank and sandals, denim shorts with an oversized shirt, a simple cotton midi dress with sneakers, relaxed shorts with a sleeveless top, or a skirt with a plain tee.

Men: tailored shorts with a good T-shirt, a linen shirt with shorts, lightweight trousers with a tee, or a knit polo with shorts, plus clean sneakers or simple sandals.

You do not need a specially bought brunch outfit. A clean shirt, decent shorts and good shoes already understand the assignment.

What to wear around Campbell Parade

This is where pure beachwear becomes normal streetwear again. A swimsuit under clothes is logical if you are moving to or from the water, but once you are spending time in cafés, shops and restaurants, add the clothes. An oversized shirt, shorts, a dress or lightweight trousers are enough.

This is not about being conservative or formal. A beachfront suburb still has places where people are eating lunch rather than swimming.

Sunset drinks and dinner in Bondi

For sunset drinks, wear something that still feels good after a hot afternoon but looks like the evening has begun.

Women: relaxed trousers, a fitted tank, flat sandals and a small bag, or a simple midi dress with a light shirt.

Men: tailored shorts or lightweight trousers, a linen or cotton shirt and clean sneakers. The shirt that spent the afternoon in your beach bag often becomes the evening layer. Efficient. We approve.

Dinner

Bondi dinner is usually less formal than a high-end CBD night, although the restaurant always wins if it has a dress expectation. Elevated casual is the useful middle ground: a midi or mini dress, linen trousers and a fitted top, a skirt and tank, or chinos with a knit polo and clean minimal sneakers or loafers. Do you need a jacket in Bondi in summer?

Usually not during the day. At night, a very light layer can help if you are right beside the water or a southerly change comes through. Choose an oversized shirt, a light cotton knit, a thin overshirt or a very light jacket.

Do not carry a bulky jacket all day just because the weather app shows a slightly cooler night. The layer should be small enough to disappear into your bag.

Fabrics, colours and shoes

What fabrics work best?

In summer the fabric matters more than the label. Look for linen, cotton, lightweight poplin, breathable technical fabrics for exercise and light blends that do not trap heat. Not every “summer dress” is pleasant in summer: a thick, non-breathable synthetic dress is much less useful than a loose cotton shirt and shorts.

What colours work?

Bondi’s hard summer light suits clean colour: white, pale blue, navy, stone, denim, cream, olive and chocolate are easy foundations. Summer is also a good time for stronger colour. A red dress, cobalt swimsuit, green shirt or bright bag looks excellent against the ocean and sandstone. The useful Olivia rule: if the colour is strong, the silhouette can stay simple.

What shoes should you wear?

Two pairs cover most of a Bondi summer: flat sandals or slides for the beach and casual warm days, and clean sneakers for the coastal walk, exploring, cafés and nights with walking. Add a smarter pair only if your plans need them. Heels are optional. Dragging three pairs of evening shoes to Bondi and then wearing sneakers every night is an efficient way to transport shoes around Australia without enjoying them.

Beach safety matters more than the outfit

Waverley Council lists lifeguard patrol hours for Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama of 6am to 7pm every day from October to April. Swim between the red-and-yellow flags and follow lifeguard instructions.

If you are heading into the ocean, that advice outranks anything Olivia has to say about sandals.

What not to wear in Bondi in summer

Heavy fabrics

They become irritating very quickly on an all-day outdoor itinerary.

Sandals on the coastal walk

Wear sneakers.

Only swimwear away from the beach

Take a shirt and bottoms.

Anything too precious

An outfit that cannot handle sunscreen, salt or sand belongs somewhere else.

Too many separate looks

Bondi works better when the same pieces move through the day.

Ignoring the forecast

Hot spells and southerly changes both happen. Check before you dress.

One outfit for a full Bondi summer day

Say you are swimming in the morning, having lunch, wandering around Bondi and meeting friends for drinks later.

Women

One-piece swimsuit, relaxed linen trousers, oversized cotton shirt, flat sandals and sunglasses. Carry clean underwear, a small evening bag if you care, and sneakers if a serious walk is planned.

Men

Simple swim shorts, a lightweight shirt, clean sandals or sneakers and sunglasses. After the beach, dry off, put the shirt on properly and you are largely done.

The Olivia rule for Bondi in summer

Dress for the heat, but make sure the outfit still works after you leave the sand.

That means breathable clothes, useful layers, comfortable shoes and serious sun protection rather than a wardrobe built around an imaginary Bondi uniform.

And if the forecast says 35 degrees, darling, nobody sensible is awarding points for complicated fashion. Find the shade. Wear the shirt. Keep the caviar cold.

Bondi summer FAQs

What should I wear to Bondi Beach in summer?

Swimwear with an oversized cotton or linen shirt, light shorts or trousers, flat sandals, a hat and sunglasses. The shirt doubles as sun coverage and your café layer afterwards.

How hot is Bondi in summer?

Long-term Bureau of Meteorology averages for Sydney Airport are about 26 to 27°C by day and 18 to 19°C overnight from December to February, but hot spells regularly go well above that.

What shoes should I wear for the Bondi to Coogee walk?

Proper sneakers. The walk covers several kilometres with stairs and exposed sections, so leave delicate sandals for the beach.

Do I need a jacket in Bondi in summer?

Rarely during the day. Pack one very light layer, such as an oversized shirt or thin knit, for evenings by the water or a southerly change.
